The Sheffield "Moscow Sessions" arrived today - still crazy good after all these years

First listen in 30 years and I still regard it as the best orchestral recordings of all time. Back then I was surrounded by orchestral instruments every Wednesday night and in frequent concerts, my system may have been marginally better, a great meal is seldom as good on a return trip, but this time it is.

The Moscow Philharmonic was as good as any at the time; Lawrence Leighton Smith and Dimitri Kitayenko are brilliant. Smith, hardly a household name, shows a mastery of the Tschaikowsky 5, in dynamic shadings and tempo, as good or better than Ormandy on his vaunted Columbia outing.

Oh, and there's the seldom heard Khovanshchina Prelude by Mussorgsky, a rare treat.

this is one I don't have but I bet it's a stunner and hard to find.

I hope they open up the old Philly Wanamaker (Macy's) Pipe Organ again and have some Russian's come over to play it again soon. I'll be there for the cheese steaks too.
