Not sure if its considered a top model, but I have used the Sonata from Grado. Very rich, full, high output.
Notice some hum with my Linn arm, but otherwise quite enjoyable.
I like my Denon DL-103 a little better, paired with a Cinemag SUT.

Grado ONCE sold a cartridge for about 15$ which was a winner. I installed several of these for non-audiophiles. Good performance and given the end-user, also durable.
I think it was listed as a Stereophile 'C' component.....

really depends on system matching and your tastes. the grados have one huge advantage over most mc-- their output is healthy and needs only a MM phono stage. if you need maximum resolution and finesse, you wont get it with a grado. instead you will get a rich compelling midrange that can be sublime on vocals (assuming you have a compatible system (eg electrostatic speakers). i think it would be easier to make the grado sound good than a top MC (which tend to be fussy).

Have you owned Grado Master or models above that?, posted on September 25, 2020 at 08:55:12
Upper end Grados are VERY good carts - different world than carts like their Sonata. There are many mc's I haven't heard but I HAVE heard a number of 'em that received rave reviews. I preferred the Grado Master and Reference because to my ears they reproduce more natural timbre and have plenty of "detail". Needless to say, to each his own.

I would hope they've fixed that. Mine was the $1200 Reference/Reference. Not a bad cart but I don't miss it. Sorry, Rick.

yes, agreed. the better grados are worth ponying up for (probably because of stylus&cantalever0 . i owned the master and have heard the reference many times in a system i know well. musically excellent and superb on operatic and vocal music. the gold plasticy look horrible are actually quite good ( and music maker makes a superb cartridge from it) even though they have different strenghts from the rich wood bodies. i have not heard the dance or hum issues that people often talk about. about 10 years ago, there was buzz about clearaudio beta (about $350). in my opinion the good grados were considerably better. my MM cartridge to beat is the music maker which is a completely different animal from grado. i think the buyer who needs what a good grado can do, will be very happy with a grado. probably, more happy with a grado than a mega-drool MC
