Hmmmm....vinyl ionizer....(link)

I have never had issues of static build up, even with the dreaded Linn and Rega felt mats, but for those that suffer the malaise, there is a cure for every sickness. See link:

The Milty Zerostat works fine and costs a tiny fraction of what that gizmo would cost!

Ticks and pops are usually due to contaminants left over from cleaning solutions improperly rinsed off or leftover particulates so I rarely need to use the Zerostat.

The zerostat really works - if you transfer cereals like rice bubbles to storage containers, you will typically see crumbs attracted to the plastic bag or container walls. Zap the container with the ZErostat and they fall off!

I bought a ionizing air blower ESD fan that I connected to a computer monitor arm so I can swing the fan over the record as it plays. Surface noise dropped significantly. No static. You can find them used on ebay for under $100.00. You have to drill holes in the fan case to connect it to the monitor arm.

How quiet is that fan? Seems like a possible pissing in the wind situation, pun intended.

...which is unusual, given the time of year. Usually I only experience mat cling in the winter, when the heat is on.

The fan has a speed control so I use it at its lowest setting. I can barely hear it between cuts. Once music is playing you can not hear it at all

That doodad was designed for and is being marketed to on that hip site.

Zerostat and a negative ion generator nearby should suffice but will look much more mundane.

Stylus friction as a cause of static charge on LPs, posted on August 7, 2020 at 18:51:58

The advertising blurb on the website posits that friction of the stylus tip in the groove is one cause of static charge build-up. The idea seems plausible to me, so I don't dismiss it out of hand. But in the only "scientific" study of static charge on LP surfaces that I know about, published in a white paper by Shure Corporation probably more than 50 years ago, the Shure investigators said they looked for evidence that stylus friction causes static charge and found no good case for it. Unfortunately, while the paper describes in detail many of the experiments they performed in order to characterize static charge on LPs, it does not describe the particular experiment they may have done to rule out stylus friction as a cause; they just say results were negative.

It may be that the idea is just one of those ideas that has been repeated and re-repeated so often it has become "true".

I thought of you last night, Ghost, while playing Dwight Yoakam's Hillbilly Deluxe. It's too bad more albums aren't recorded this well.

Yes, I have been doing this for years! DIY, of course. My cost was minimal (link below) compared to this unit. Built both + and -. Mine does not look nice at all but it works well.

The vinyl always has one charge when I remove it from the platter, which is expected based upon the triboelectric series. In anything but deep WI Summer, I can hear the charges neutralizing when I circulate the record under one of the emitters. Don't recall which one (it's the left one!:)

One of my fellow vinylphile bought this and did comparison videos posted on Facebook a few months ago. I think the effect is quite obvious. Unexpected, but that would be nice for someone who has the money for it.
