Damn.

Grew up falling asleep to the K Trio.

My older brother was a huge fan. We shared a room for a few years. He used to stack up three or four of their records on the changer at bed time every night and hit play.

Cool story. At 74, I grew up with these guys and tried to play "Scotch and Soda" , posted on June 1, 2020 at 17:45:34

on my guitar. They sounded a lot better. :)

Both Shane and Guard graduated from my high school in Hawaii, but Shane preceded me by 13 years. I saw Shane in Phoenix in 1970, when he was touring with yet another version of the Kingston Trio, and the sound was the same as before.

I am always amazed how many of the Trio's LPs show up in thrift stores. Just music from a bygone era I guess.

The hootenanny crowd were a bunch of wanabe's. The only other groups that even came close were the Brothers Four and Peter, Paul and Mary.

I agree. I was just using the term for that particular time period. , posted on June 1, 2020 at 19:12:34

However, I would also add The Limelighters and the Chad Mitchell Trio to your list.

They were really good and I've always been a folk fan but in a class of their own? Just off the top of me head PP&M were better and if I have to pick a best group(albeit without much harmony, mainly a lead female singer) Pentangle was an awesome group. For an older group, the Weavers were competition. And some individual performers were impressive, Doc Watson?

But by the way it's a fun discussion and brings back memories that have faded a bit. Thanks.

It's funny, but you picked up two groups that started either a decade, posted on June 1, 2020 at 21:19:39

earlier or a decade later than the Kingston Trio. I like both of those groups and have most of the Pentangle LPs and a couple Weavers, including their great recording at Carnegie Hall. John Renbourn is one of my favorite guitarists, and I carried his CD "Travelers Prayer" on all my flight trips around the world for ten years.

If we were to include individual performers during the Trio's period, than the list would be very long.

Bert Jansch is one for me ... good thing they worked together

I know that Jimmy Page feels the same way

no Zeppelin III otherwise

He graduated in my HS class. Well, no matter, I haven't heard a thing from/about him since, and that was decades ago.

But seriously, note this news was from last January. I commented with a personal story about Shane then. I was a big Kingston Trio fan and probably still have 10 or 12 of their LPs.

Some folk "purists" were negative about the Kingston Trio, but that happens often when a musician is degraded after too much commercial success. Now it is no wonder so many KT albums show up in thrift stores. Just notice nearly all were played to death, there's a good reason for that. ;^)

must have been with him. I can see why you would want to improve on that experience. Funny.

There was a period when I did lots of searching through thrift store LPs in San Diego. It seemed nearly all the Kingston Trio were dirty and scratched. I wasn't looking to buy any as I already had all I wanted, but because I liked them I take a quick glance. The only surprise was a 4-record "best of" set in near mint condition that I did buy because of a couple of later songs I didn't have, plus stereo versions of some numbers. My original LPs are all mono due to the period when I bought them.

Alaska. This was my first trip to a thrift store since mid-March due to covid-19. I did wear my mask. I forgot to check the record condition, and I already had this LP anyway.
