I have a pair of Stevens and Billington TX 103 transformers that I want to build into an SUT for my rig. The TX103 can be configured for various step up ratios. I'd like to make my unit capable of being switched between 1:10 (20dB) or 1:20 (26dB) which requires switching eight poles. I can't find any kind of eight pole switch, the only thing I can think of is a DIP socket into which one would plug separate DIP compnent carriers headers wired for each configuration.

Would such a configuration degrade SQ even if I use Gold sockets? I would use fine silver wire to make the connections. Anybody have a better idea?

all you need is a DPDT switch per channel so a single 4PDT swithc will do stereo.

I've been staring at the schematic and drawing diagrams for a week. Could you number the poles in your drawing, It's not computing and I'm sure it's just me.
Thanks

Dave am I missing something? Looks to me like what you've drawn would work for switching 14dB/20dB, if 2 and 3, were joined together, and 6 and 7 joined together. Wouldn't 26dB require all 4 coils in parallel?

I think your idea is pretty clever.

As far as SQ, your approach is probably superior to a switch., if you could find one. Some people claim they can hear everything. Try it and see if you like it.

you are correct but since the 14dB hookup isn't needed it might be worth looking at paralleling windings 1-2 with 5-6 and 3-4 with 7-8 and then the switching arrangement will work.

26db position is right.

In the 20db position 2,6,3 and 7 are bound together

That shouldn't matter since they all form what would be a center tap and should be at the same potential. It would actually be interesting to leave the cartridge floating and simply get the ground reference via the center tap and see what happens.

Head hurts???

I thought the RPi was a brain buster and now you come up with this. Dang! I'm glad we are on the same team!

You may want to preliminarily wire the transformer as instructed and do a frequency sweep and then connect the "center taps" together and see if that changes anything just to be safe. As I said it shouldn't matter but then again these things can be rather complex in their behaviors so better safe than....

Easy enough to do. Thanks again.

Should I use a scope or my ear with a test record? I don't have a signal generator.
