Louis Moreau Gottachalk was America's Chopin. Born in 1829 in New Orleans (or should I say N' Orlins) he made it to the ripe old age of 40 - probably good for that period. Still, during his short 40 years, he managed to tour most of North America and then South America where he finally laid down his hat - the wild west took exception to his romantic peccadilloes. Gottschalk's compositions add a Creole twist, the ghost of a saloon-bar piano or a hint of some vaguely familiar pot-boiler melody to Chopin' s more cerebral Etudes and Minuets. It's all a bit gauche, but unashamedly enjoyable and very compelling. |
