I am using an Ortofon Super OM20 mounted on a SME Series III tonearm (turntable - Garrard 301) and have been very happy with the OM20's performance. I have used it for about 500 hours and plan to use it for another 300 before retiring the same. Since I don't have a microscope nor the skill to figure out if a stylus is worn out, I don't want to push my luck to a 1000 hours.

In store, I do have a fresh OM20 stylus as a backup.

I am wondering when the time comes to 'retire' the present OM20 stylus (i.e. 800 hours), would it be a good idea to upgrade to a OM30 stylus (and keep the new OM20 as a backup), or get myself a JICO VN35HE or VN35 neoSAS/S for my Shure V15 Type III cartridge.

Price wise - the OM30 stylus (from a recognised dealer) is about $300/-, the JICO VN35HE is about $ 115/-, and the VN35 neoSAS/S is about $ 211/- (shipping, taxes are extra).

Or just use my new OM20 stylus (and keep an OM10 as a backup - can always reorder a better stylus when needed)!

Cheers,
