I have a vintage fisher integrated tube amp that I plan to have restored. I see a lot of talk about replacing the capacitors. Should the large can electrolytic caps be replaced too? I know the restoration kits that you can buy from VTV or the fisher doc do not include these caps. If the caps need replacing, should I get caps that can be put under the chasis? I know that a lot of the can caps are obsolete.

Hi,
If the existing cans are in good shape and are filtering properly(no hum)don't worry about it.If a problem develops, you can use Xichon caps, which will fit under the chassis.Look for leakage or gunk around the seal on the bottom of the can,and if present,go ahead and bypass the can with under chassis caps.Even if no hum is present, this is a sure sign of a can failing.
There are some services that rebuild can type caps if you are concerned about under chassis appearance.
If your amp uses a selenium rectifier, absolutely replace it with a modern silicon type,as the selenium types can fail with horrible results. They can take out output tubes, transformers(big $$$$$).
Best,
Pat
