I have an old Pioneer SX 680 receiver that will not produce sound. I replaced the IC's in it and still no sound is to be heard. Would I be happy with the sound after spending 50+ dollars on repairs or was this receiver not all that great to begin with. Would it be worth it to get it fixed and spend the money to get it up and running or should I just cut my losses?

I had a SX-780, 45 watts RMS, and I was not to thrilled about it. It may have just needed new caps or something, it just didn't have the low or high end oomph that I liked. I compared it to a Marantz 2020b, a Luxman R-1040 and Onkyo A-7070 integrated, and they all sounded much better. The choice is yours, you could always part the unit out on ebay.

The SX-680 was a low end receiver when it was new and had no claims to wonderful sound. I believe it used those monolithic amplifier chips (from Sanyo, I think) that put out a quick and dirty 40 or so watts per channel. Personally, I think if you can be guaranteed that $50 bucks will put it right then go for it, but don't drop another dime on it and save your pennies for something better.

How about the SX-780? Did this have the better transistors or the cheap Darlington packs like the 580 did?, posted on March 29, 2001 at 11:02:11

Just wondering. I have the 780, and it sounds simply wonderful on my small Maggies.

As far as I know, that product line used the STK series IC's. I have been told that these chips very of a poor design and subject to failure and that is why other designs such as MOSFET took over in later models. I am not sure about the SX780, I know that the SX737 uses MOSFET's instead of IC's. This receiver has about the same power as the 680, about 35 watts per channel RMS. I would like to see the two running side by side to see which sounds better. Has anyone tried this yet?
