I recently acquired a beat up pair of Wharfedale speakers, model W60(no suffix). They have sealed tweeters, ports and ~12in woofers. I would appreciate any information regarding them such as crossover point, efficiency, age, hints regarding tweaks and restoration, opinions about the sound, etc. IMHO, they sound great, but don't seem to be very efficient. I have searched asylum and web, but didn't find too much. Thanks in advance,

Rich

Rich-

If my memory serves me correctly, these babies date from the mid-60s, and feature heavy sand-filled cabinets. They were the British equivalent of the AR3a, and had a somewhat "dry", analytical sound that was quintessentially British.

Many, though not all, European speakers of that vintage were a bit inefficient, and optimised to play at moderate volume in apartments and attached houses. You night, however, want to check the crossovers to see if they are in good shape - bad/failing crossover can choke volume.

If I am thinking of the right speaker, the cabinets can be refinished readily. If drivers are intact and crossovers good, go ahead and play them; I think modern drivers are likely to be way too efficient to easily integrate.

Wharefedale is still in business - you might try contacting them about these speakers!
