Wow. Looks like the Vintage board has pretty much died.

It's Jan 15th and this is the first new thread of the year?? The last new thread was 18 days ago, on Dec 28th, and the last response to any previous post was a week ago.

I've noticed that AA, in general, is much less active than it was years ago but Vintage used to be a lively place. Sad . . . just sad.

where 'inmate central' is the main place for topics and attacks from idiots who live to pick fights or try to prove they are superior. The 'SHOOT FIRST, ASK QUESTIONS LATER' clown posse.

Vintage? yes I have lots of vintage stuff that's made with older parts that are still alive and well if I haven't modded them or changed out a few parts.

Older, 30 year old big ass Sprague Made in the USA supply caps that are STILL alive even though I bought replacements for them years ago from companies that now source them from.....CHINA of all the stupidest places to have them made because they don't last very long compared to USA or British stuff.

And the price for amps and such? More like funds for dwindling companies because interest in Hi-FI is nearly gone compared to even 20 years ago.

My Class A amp, which was considered top rated in the late 90's for 2k would go for 20k now, most likely more. It was better than my now long gone Class A Levinson.

Take a look at the inmate roster over the years - there are a multitude and counting them would be an undertaking. Now? Don't go to General or Vintage because you'd think the browser cache didn't clear and you were looking at things a week ago.

And most all of that money goes to China. Farewell 'Made in USA'.

Pretty active, along with Music and Classical Court.

Tube/DIY is rocking as well, now that you can post about something OTHER THAN power supply seines resistance.

As is Speakers and Hi Eff, at least to some extent.

All is not lost.

you're right, all is not lost as there are many who still forge ahead in their pursuits. I have a nice vinyl library and go there every day to see what's up. It's probably the most frequented place here but IC outnumbers it big time.

Cheers

I remember how lively this posting group was. That was back in a time where you could dumpster dive a Pioneer SX750 or Marantz. Now these same pieces have become costly to buy, collector pieces and no longer a surprising find at a local thrift shop.

I remember dozens of daily posts of "hey, look what I found on the curb today". Or "I just bought this for $10 at a flee market". Now it's more like I just paid $1000-$1500 for a Marantz 2270.

The second and even sadder part is that many of the valued members have moved on. And I do mean that in several different ways.

it just never seemed all that interesting.

My beef with most forums' "vinyl" sections is that over the past 10 or so years they've been overrun with (from my perspective) argumentative, neurotic, compulsive tweakers who over-obsess about the alignment and setup of their cartridges, so that they can over-obsess about the specific pressing of whichever album they're going to over-obsessively clean.

... and, tube geek that I am, I just never really "got into" the Tube or Tube DIY forums here at AA. Dunno why.

what cartridge is on there and did you use a protractor for set up?

Got a Marantz 2320 around here someplace, should I dig it out and post it on Asylum Trader?

Sounds like I should!

Have you been on tweak/DIY lately. I gave up going there when they spend about TWO months on titanium plate outlet screws. And that was after I waited out about three months of outlet plate discussions and how they elevated their systems to glorious angelic levels.

Not quite as many 'What's Spinning' posts as in past years, but I'm not one to spend all that much time dickin' about with protractors and I'm not seeing that much of that sort of thing being posted there of late.

Airtime, How's the VTA-70 doing? anything new? I will bring my VTA-120 back out into my system after I go through the sockets and clean them and retention the blades for better contact before firing it up.

Yeah, That was crazy about the Titanium screw. They wanted me to try it but was already cool with what I had in sound for my system. The Carbon Fiber Outlet cover did work but not like they said. And all the talk on AC connectors. I myself did get caught up in it a little but came to my senses. So just stayed away after that but do check in some times.

I remember the days when there would be some really good info on tweaks forum that people would share their experiences on what had worked circuits or other things. I remember a lot of IC tweaking and talk on how to bypass or how to make your IC run in Class mode. Nothing like that anymore. Just talk about the wire thickness or bigger physical size resistors or caps.

I posted about the Bose 901 and EQ project I'm doing over in the speaker forum as an update but I will bring here to the Vintage forum which I think would be a better place for it.

I also have some other projects that I will share here when I get going on them. Phase Linear PL-400, tape decks and others.

I'm staying away for some forums as the same group is coming out of IC and starting their crap in other forums now.

And you are right !
I've always considered Audio Asylum as a Comedy center than anything else (spare me :-)
But IC (Idiot Commenters ?) is on an entirely lower level.
It 's Not entertainment.. it's horrifying.

I was interested in that Bose EQ project. I saw all those CC resistors and my first thought was to switch them all out for MF resistors. But --- I started to think about the inherent sound and value of the original voicing. Hey, why not just refresh those CC resistors!!!!

My VTA is an interesting project. The amp is great. I mean it is a stellar performer. However????? it's not suited towards my taste. It has a surprisingly SS sound with a lean midrange. I tried a dozen tweaks to "fatten" up the mid, but with no luck. So I'm reverting the low gain 12AU7 board back to the high gain 12AT7 version. It's just a matter of a few resistor change outs. Ah, I'll see what happens?

I have three WONDERFUL amps that I use on a rotation basis. So the VTA is a project I like to think about and tinker with.

To the 12AT7s yet, give this tube a try the 6H8C in the middle position. I tried this tube after the Northern Electric 6SN7s I tried didn't work in the middle tube spot. Very nice midrange with good upper end and very good bottom. I got mine at Upscale Audio, they were very reasonable in price. I liked them so much I bought 4 more.

As for the Bose 901 project, I was pulling the speakers out from the room I had them stored in. Hopefully I will have pics to post here very soon. If the EQ works properly, then I will go further with the upgrades and replace all the caps with Takman Carbon Film. These should work well. Also I have some Wima film caps coming to upgrade the film caps. I'm also going to try a Nichicon Film cap that is for Audio. Don't know if these are new but I never heard of them before so I will give them a try in place of the 5uf coupling caps.

Cougar,

Is Mikey sick? I have not heard from him, I have always been concerned about his health, and seems every year he is fighting something health wise.. I have neglected to contact him because he seems so swamped. He stays up way too late and I backed off calling him because he should rest. He's always trying to help everyone and their brother well into the late hours, don't want to push it.

I do miss him and hope he's doing well, anyone with news about Mikey please chime in or PM me..

Thanks all,

Jeff

I just got an email from Jeff.
I'm much better than I was. I'm trying to catch up on everything from being sidelined for 3 years and little by little I'm catching up.I'm dealing with my mother next door who is going be 97 and she was driving until last Nov.
Now she has macular and can't see very well but I now have my sister home from Fla which helps a lot now that she's retired from teaching.
We will get this forum fired back up. My major issues with health are getting much better. I'm only 62 so if family longevity is an indicator,I should live another few years haha. I hope everyone is staying healthy.

Mikey - glad to hear you're on the upswing!

Any news on FenderLover? I hadn't seen any posts from him in a while either and it looks like he hasn't posted anywhere on AA since 11/19/19. Wasn't he the moderator for the Vintage board?

Hope he's well.

Mike,

glad to hear from you, take it easy until you are fully recovered. We need you to make it further than your mother is currently and hopefully even longer, I am pretty sure she will make to 120!!

I know it's cliché but good diet, sleep, and exercise - in that order are all that is key to good long lasting health. I can't emphasize that enough! Sleep!!
