In my garage it gets as hot as 121 degrees. The last week it's been hovering at around 112-115.

It started to make me wonder at what temps does it become a "bad idea" to store both new and old stereo gear out there.

For the most part the equipment will be ok. It gets as hot or hotter when it is turned on. There are a few exceptions, I had a cosmetic piece on the outside of a CD player that doesn't heat up running that did unglue, rubber parts like belts and surrounds will stiffen and dry out... And caps probably dry out at an accelerated rate, but I haven't noticed it to be significant.

Automotive electronics doesn't seem to fail here more than other places. A lot of that is in the cabin, which reaches higher temperatures than a garage. It is the UV of the sun that really does the damage here.

Hey Charles, I would think humidity would be more of an issue.Living on the coast (high humidity part of the year) gives me problems with my woodworking tools. So all my electronics,LP's etc stay in the house. That being said our temps rarely get over 80F. Thanks again for the copy of your Sherwood S5000 owners manual you copied for me. I hope your Sherwood isn't in the garage :)

All I know is that I have had AM car radios that have gone 50 years surviving -25 degrees to 100 degrees in the garage and are still going strong and sound great. Speakers deteriorate and end up getting occasionally replaced, but the radios keep going on and on

As of now, and likely to remain so, the Sherwood S5000 is the BEST vintage tubed integrated amp.

It's very nice circuitry and the "iron" is good.

Sherwood squeezed every last drop out of PP 7189s. Don't put EL84s in a S5000, as they will fail in very short order. The only practical O/P tube for S5000s is the Russian 6П14П-EB (6p14p-ev), AKA EL84M.

Thank You Eli.

I have about 16 or 17 7189's and 7189A's.
