Picked them up earlier today.

Good working condition. The earlier one appears to have been unfinished, then stained. The later one is a factory finished cabinet.

The sound great, and balanced between channels.

Early on AR sold their speakers in unfinished pine as an option for a few dollars less than a finished speaker.

Yep. I have a pine pair of AR2ax speakers.

An audio buddy has two pair of AR3s, one pair with the pine cabinets. He had a furniture refinisher paint a faux woodgrain finish on them and they look quite decent.
