I'm also worried. It's come from a long way and from ebay. The seller seems like a smart guy so I hope he packed it well (as he said he did) and I get it in one piece!

I have a pair of 690ii speakers that are waiting for it to arrive and two turntables (a Sony PS-X5 and a Music Hall MMF-5) both of which qualify as vintage now I think because the MH will be 20 years old in 2020.

I am waiting for a high end vintage Yamaha turntable to round out the set as soon as I can get one from HIFIDO.

BUT TODAY!!!! Today, I am looking forward to hooking up both turntables and hearing what all the hubub is about with these vintage (almost) monster receivers. I only wish FM radio was broadcasting anything I cared about since I have heard the tuner on this thing is better than the Marantz tuners. AND I have an outdoor antenna for FM which sits unused because Miami radio is awful.

If it works as advertised, I will listen to it for a few months before I send it off to be completely restored.

I mean, if you don't need the tuner, it's just taking up space and power supply.

And the integrated amplifiers in Class A do sound pretty darned good.

I do hope it gets to you intact.

If it does weird things -- before panicking, clean the preamp/power amp separate/combined switch on the back panel! BTDT, as they say.

all the best,
mrh

It arrived as advertised. It could have landed on Mars. Nothing but the scratches already shown on eBay, which are easily fixed. I was considering having it re-veneered but the original looks so good I may just keep it as is. It's a close match to the 690ii veneer. Which makes sense.

I didn't get the integrated amp because I just wanted a receiver. It's a frivolous thing having to do with looking at them through store windows when I was 9 knowing I would never (in 9 year old speak) have one. In your FACE 9 year old me!

Put DSOTM on and cranked it up and was extremely happy with the sound. I can only imagine it will improve once I have it restored.

The seller (muffinhead) did a great job packing the receiver and it arrived intact and working just as he said. I'll post a picture in a few. I excitedly hooked up my two turntables to it as soon as it arried and it sounds fantastic.

Compared to the phono section of the Onkyo A/V receiver that was there before there in NO contest, and this is without any restoration yet! I can only imagine that once it's all re-capped and whatever out of spec components are replaced it can only get better.

Granted, the Onkyo in question was essentially a BOTL placeholder I usually use to power the outdoor speakers, but still, why put such crappy phono sections in these things? I can see the vinyl resurgence coming to a screeching halt with all these garbage phono sections.

Some bulbs are out, I knew that going in. Don't care. They will be fixed soon enough. Nice and clean pots. Nothing scratchy anywhere, no hums, just great sound.

Played my St. Germaine Tourist (Blue Note) and Doug Mcloud Reference Recordings and they both sounded very very good!

Giving the Mcloud a second spin as I write this and I'm not hearing the weak bass the Yamaha speakers are supposed to have.

Considering I literally slammed this whole system together in 30 minutes just to hear it (the speakers are just plopped there next to the DefTechs) it sounds very good with a nice, wide and very good separation between instruments. Once I place the speakers, move stuff around etc I think the system will sound way better than I imagined.

I may eventually place the receiver where the center speaker is or re-adjust the shelves to put the xbox on the very bottom and put the center speaker up where the receiver is. I shoved the center speaker down there to have the receiver up on top so I could easily hook up and test it out etc, but the center's real location is on top.

I'll also probably put the Yamaha speaker stands on rubber casters so I can easily move them up and back for listening/stowing.

I had the power supply bulletin performed as a precaution, even though everything was working fine. As others have said, the CR-2020 is clean and dynamic. I do need an outdoor antenna for mine, as it is in a basement location. My Terk am/fm indoor antenna has marginal reception. Have fun.

Yes I did! I printed out all three pages to send with the receiver once I come to an arrangement for restoration. I wish someone local did it. It's such a drag and expense packing and sending 50 pounds of receiver.

doing the overhaul. I found two people in my small city, and one even works on tube equipment. My two techs were fortunately easily found just using the yellow pages, and asking if they could do the work. The tube specialist works on TVs and hifi and makes and plays classical guitar. What a combo!

I would think that some stereo or record stores would also have suggestions. I once shopped at a record store in the late 90s just North over the Dade County line not too far from the water. That place had great old vinyl, and I bet the owner would know where older equipment could be repaired. Sorry that I cannot remember the shop name.

I found a guy on AK that's a Yamaha specialist and aside from what will no doubt be an expensive ship, I feel comfortable with him and his fantastic feedback. In this area unfortunately all I have experienced in any type of service (with very few exceptions) is bad to "just ok" so for my own peace of mind I am shipping!

That's my absolute favorite receiver. Love the way it looks and sounds.

Sold quite a few back in the late 70's, when I was working audio.

Enjoy !

Dean.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
