...the lead time for a replacement capacitor is 16-23 weeks. The bulging cap is a Koshin KL5, 16V, 12000 uF, aluminum electrolytic snap-in, 22x30mm. Any ideas on where I might find a replacement, direct or compatible, that would be available in a couple of weeks as opposed to a few months? I did find an authorized service center nearby and sent them an email to see if they have one. In the meantime, I figured I would ask here as well. Thanks in advance...

It is going to be difficult to find unless you can compromise by going to a bit bigger case size or possibly a non snap in style. For example could you use a taller cap? The other question is it 10mm lead pitch?

It is 10mm pitch. There is plenty of room for a compatible replacement. Not sure if radial is available in the same ratings. The local service shop has nothing on hand and says they rely on the same suppliers. I will probably remove the old one and reassemble the unit until the replacement arrives. Don't want to forget where all of those screws go...

For example if you could go to a 42mm height you can order these right now but the shipping is practically robbery.

I was thinking axial lead, not radial. Radial is what is coming out of the unit. I could use an axial with no problem, as far as fitting inside the chassis is concerned.

Digi-Key has 13 options with 10mm lead spacing in stock.

if you can also use 2 caps soldered in parallel with wires and placed in the circuit until the caps arrive. Sounds like you have the space.

Along with the possible 13 options from Digi-Key they also have a policy of free shipping with a prepaid order. I was thinking about ordering a couple of connectors and I think she quoted me $4.95 shipping before she figured out how to get rid of the shipping costs. Shawntel sent me an email with this contact info for a prepaid order: 1800-344-4539 x13021 or 1-218-681-7979.

You might consider getting an "audio grade" cap?? Don't know if Digi-key has these.

While you are at it, don't just replace the one that is bulging, replace all the capacitors of the same reference
anything would be better than Koshin I think

I ordered Nichicon, one for the bad cap and a pair to replace the ones at the output near the binding posts. It's an older unit, used for casual music listening and TV audio. I don't know where Nichicon falls on the quality scale, and I'm not overly concerned about the sound quality. Just want it to work again.

The best audio-grade electrolytic caps are still only a few dollars each (okay except the very large values)
the work is the same whatever you choose
you really should replace more than just the bulging caps, assuming there's one for each channel, you should replace both.
You won't feel the difference in your pocket and it won't be more difficult to do.
It doesn't matter if you only use the amp for "casual listening", things ought to be done right IMHO ;-)

Anything worth doing is worth doing right. But there is another old saying - if it aint broke, don't fix it.

I am replacing a bulging cap that is common to both channels, probably related to the power supply for the output board. It is the only one of its value on the board. There are two larger caps near the binding posts, obviously one for each channel. They are not bulging but I am replacing those as well.

There are 12 other caps on the pcb I had to remove, from pencil eraser size to about 1cm x 2cm. Rather than risk unnecessary damage to the pcb, I am choosing to leave well enough alone. After all, this is a 15 year old mid-fi receiver with a built-in dvd player. It doesn't need to be fancy, I just want it to work again.

The great news is, the wife says she doesn't like the silver faceplate. And I would like to move into the modern age with an amp/dac/streamer with bluetooth capability and smart phone interface. Also thinking class D amplification so that ventilation isn't as big of a concern, and hopefully smaller footprint. It's looking like daddy gets an upgrade this holiday season!

I plan on using top quality caps when I refurb my Infinity RS-4/b's and B&K amp. These pieces are listened to critically in the media room, so quality will be top priority. And of course I will start here for recommendations on which type/brand to use.

I appreciate your insights. Happy Thanksgiving!

I believe Yamaha has a couple class D amp/streamer/DAC in their catalog, you should check those out, I've heard good things!
