I need to replace a bulging cap in a NAD receiver. In order to get the pcb out I need to disconnect one end of this ribbon cable. But I'm not quite sure how it mates with its counterpart on the pcb. And I certainly don't want to damage it. I lightly pulled on one end of the connector with some small needle nose pliers but nothing seemed to be giving. Anyone have experience with this type of connector? Is the white connector a female end, and the pcb has male pins? Thanks in advance...

that one in the pic looks like the entire 'ribbon' is inserted into the socket on the pcb. Try pulling just a bit on it and see if it moves a little outward.

If the other side is the same, just gently pull it out and clean before
reinsertion

I would agree that the ribbon is fixed on to the PCB.

The un-terminated ribbon cable is inserted into a socket. Don't use pliers which could damage the wires and/or the socket. Firmly grip the ribbon cable with the fingers of both hands, and begin pulling it out from the socket, with pressure being exerted at one side of the wiring first, then at the other side of the wiring, with a gentle rocking motion until it starts to give. If you are patient and methodical you won't damage the interface, since it's designed to be a detachable connection, BS64.

That looks like a ZIF cable/connector.

Most of the time the connector has a little latching mechanism that can release the cable. Presumably it would be on the other side of the cable than shown in the pic if it is there.

If no latch, then it is probably just friction fit and a gentle tug should release it.

I googled ZIF and then took a closer look at the connector. I failed to notice the blue plastic wrap that provides reinforcement to the ribbon cable, just above the connector. So you all are correct, the white connector is mounted to the pcb and the ribbon inserted into the connector. Thanks, again! Let the rehab begin!
