My greetings to Asulum members!

I repeat my question posted to the Vintage Asylum:

Today I decided to open (for the first time in 4 years) my Sansui AU-517 integrated amp purchased 4 years ago from UK in order to blow away the dust and to look inside for bulging and/or discolored caps, etc.

I am not a tech and cannot make competent conclusions, but I noticed some brown-color trace in one or two caps mounted on a PCB. Perhaps, it is just a glue (goo) residue?

I am posting pictures and will appreciate your comments and opinions.

I believe the brown stuff is just glue, but it doesn't matter: any amp as old as your Sansui is due for a complete recap. Your ears will thank you, and your amp will be safe.

Thanks, I will consider recapping by a competent tech.

Recapping will cost maybe 500$.
I'm curious what "new amp" you think of that would beat that Sansui for such a low budget? If you are thinking NAD or Cambridge, I'm sorry, but no.

I would not purchase NAD or Cambridge. I would certainly audition the
Rega Brio and IO, however.

15 years is a general time limit for electrolytics. Bulging and leaking caps are a warning to get it done ASAP.

Don't listen to him. Recap it and enjoy. The Sansui AU series were some of their best sounding amps Sansui ever made.

would be like putting a $50 saddle on a $5 horse.

I would have a knowledgeable tech scope it for a baseline and take it from there ... his pix seem to show some glue flow that you'll see on older pieces, that's what it looks like, that can, and should be cleaned off 'cause it can become conductive, but if it scopes well and as long as it has a grounded power cord just go ahead and use it, it's 'new' enough that another 5 > 10 volts off the mains won't bother it

it's worth recapping too ... there's modern equivalents, but that's the thing, they're equivalent, not better ... even in inflation adjusted $$

the service manual is readily available so a good tech is where to start

or in so many [more] words I agree

regards,

I like that old saying

here's another: a $5.00 horse is called 'glue'

Apart from Sansui, which I like, I have four other amps including Eico HF81, Eico ST-40 (both restored by US sellers), Cary SLI-80 and a Chinese SE EL-34 based amp. Quite enough, I believe.

I'm sorry but that's nonsense.
Our friend the OP has quite a few other amps, it seems, so there's some logic in thinking he probably likes this amp very much, since it's being used.
Sansui made some great amps, in the end it's all down to personal preference and system synergy, but a new entry level Rega won't necessarily be "better" IMO.
