So, need to have some tips or thoughts of what to use as an inexpensive platform for my new turntable. Needs to be at least 18x15....the board that I am currently using is really not big enough and I am a little concerned about it being a little tight on the corners...

thanks!

Cant use a Lack as it sits on top of the rack...

Do you want a platform that will sit upon your rack - under the TT?
or a free-standing unit that will support the table at a height of....?

For the first option - there are a few options- depending upon how much work you want to do and how 'ready to use" you want it...

-Butcher block - there have been a few comments about BooS Blocks - a commercial cutting board/butcher block mfgr; there is butcher block countertop material usually sold by the linear foot, often 25" deep...

-There are also stone and synthetic countertop materials - Corian(r) is supposed to be particularly inert...

-A thick piece of acrylic or Lexan from TAP Plastics or the like

- you could also make a composite multilayered platform from two or more of these (above) with rubber or cork in-between a layer or two...

Happy Listening

Hi
Have you looked at Mapleshade platforms? Their site has some interesting info on vibration isolation and dampening.

Cut pieces of ambrosia maple are also available online at hardwood supply stores in custom sizes and as random leftovers.

I took a shot of the base that I made for my VPI. I glued pieces of soft wood and framed them with miter cuts of another type of soft wood; which exact kind I don't remember, bought them at Lowes and leftover in my shop. I had just enough to make any dimensions I needed. A little bit of stain also, and then some polyurethane.

The dust cover is mounted to the wall behind. I clamped everything with Elmer's wood glue over night, no dowling or drilling, only lined up just right on the topside. Didn't cost much to do either. I've had it about 16 years now.

I Googled ambrosia maple and found a number of online sources for audio sized slabs. While not nicely finished (good winter project), the prices were reasonable.

I haven't purchased from them, so no experience comments, but the following looked promising:

Woodworkerssource.com and curlymaplewood.com

I'm sure there are more. Google-on......
