Both John Marks and Harry Pearson have recommended Nordost Eco 3 (now 3x)
anti static spray as an effective product for reducing/eliminating static
electricity on cables and other surfaces. But the stuff is $40 (at
Musicdirect), and there are many other products on the market for way, way
less money. Is there any reason to prefer the Nordost over other products?
What, if anything, do you use to combat static electricity?

I am using the Nordost on my cables and regular spray on the rugs in my room. The Eco stuff goes a long way if you just use it on cables.

Where are you at that static is such a problem? I'm guessing someplace very dry. Have you considered a root cause fix, like a humidifier? Or is there some other sources of the static?

Ric Schultz recommends using an anti static spray on one of his youtube videos, and he's the tweakmaster IMO. All cans, I believe, are required to have labels so my guess is they are very similar--except for price. I was wondering about using anti-static sheets and rubbing them on said areas? Don't know about the sound.

I bought some ECO 3 many years ago when it was being recommended for spraying on the label side of CDs. As soon I I sprayed it for the first time the distinctive smell indicated that it may be nothing more than Teepol (or Teepol diluted), an industrial detergent.

Of course the use of detergent as an anti-static agent in the audio world goes back into at least the 1960s from my memory. I recall a brand of anti-static record cleaning cloth that was popular here in the UK at that time and which was simply a cloth soaked in detergent then left to dry on the manufacturer's washing line (really).

I have found nothing to dissuade me from the idea that ECO3 is based around one of the Teepol products (or a US equivalent), the only difficulty now being that since I noted the similarity Teepol have introduced many specialist detergent products for various purposes. A possibility is either BGS Universal cleaner or more likely Multi Purpose Detergent which is available in 5L packs ( this was the only size available when I noticed the similarity originally).

As 5L of Teepol Multi Purpose is less than 9 g.b.p the price comparison to ECO3 may be of interest.

I've used it and it works as advertised. Who else has used it?

No. A tape eraser demagnetises ferromagnetic materials and an anti-static spray disperses static electricity.

I have a old bottle of Nordost ECO 3 ( 8 ounces ) and a recently purchased bottle of ECO 3X ( 4 ounces ) they did not raise the price, they just give you half as much ( wink, wink )

I spray a cloth with 2 to 3 squirts and use the cloth on a pair or interconnects. Spray again, and another pair of interconnects. Sound about right?

Yes, that sounds about right, I also spritz a dab on the print / label side of sacd and red book discs and lightly buff it with a viva paper towel before going on the Acoustic Revive demagnetizer

Not sufficiently pricey though to be considered audiophile grade:

Umm ... turn off gear, put some water in a spray bottle, apply lightly, wait a few minutes for things to dry, static gone. Want it to evaporate quicker? Add a little alcohol. Cost? ... nothing. Results? ... exactly the same as the $40 dollar bottle of audiophile grade water and alcohol; "a dramatic increase in the sense of life and presence, greater transparency, wider dynamics and richer colors." Whatever that means.

If static is a problem treat the air, not the gear ... get a humidifier. Besides that ... the reality? It's not the problem as described by these purveyors of snake oil.

Facepalm. I just can't believe what is being "sold" to people, and I don't mean the products. The ideas.

I've used dryer anti static sheets for several years now. Occasionally I hear crackling and hissing through the speakers. When I lightly rub My Venhaus recipe diy finesilver IC's with the sheets, it ussually resolves within a few seconds. Occasionally I'll need to rub the PC's as well. Never had it not work.

The nice thing is we use the sheets for laundry so there's nothing extra to buy. One sheet lasts for months.

Brillianize- Great on cables and cds, IMO.
