 Back in the day, there were a number of DIY projects that involved a quantity-discount based on many DIY builders joining their funds for a discount on parts. It might be a rewarding idea to get group-buy DIY projects up-and-running again in Audio Asylum. I remember enjoying the interaction of the AA Inmates, and the interesting insights that can be found for everyone involved, including lurkers who might seek information in the now or in the future, and/or simply enjoy the audiophile process.

 It would depend on the DIY project, and at what price point is comfortable for a group to commit to after deliberation.

 I just thought that you might have something in mind. I'd love to look into an open baffle speaker with some bass to it, but I doubt many would be that interested. Something else I am thinking about, though discounts might not matter so much, is creating a device to switch between 2 or more opamps. Using say a brown dog adapter, you then hard wire it to a box. I suppose you'd want to use test leads so the wires aren't stiff. It would be really great if you could hook up say 5 devices, and have it randomly select one. You could use leds internally to identify the opamp in use. A plastic top, to see which led is lit, and a report would be must haves. Anyway...

 That's a nice idea. If enough folks agree to a group participation, things could be determined. Perhaps a dedicated thread as topic could be posted on an AA page that could be referred to rather than hunting and pecking in the AA archives for sporadic posts with information, for example.

 Thought up 2 additions over night. 2 double pole double throw switches to add in a 6800uF cap, and a 9VDC battery. The Cap gives you more instant reserve, just to see if it's an issue. The other thing would be a battery supply, most opamps will run off of 9 volts, so to ensure that your power supply isn't an issue, that it's supplying clean power.

 intriguing, but I find them hard to follow. Maybe too technical and still in prices out of my range. I would be interested in a $400-$500 "giant killer of the year" though.

Maybe this forum would explain things better, given the membership I've come to know over the years. And I wouldn't be embarrassed to ask dumb questions. Which I often do!

 That would depend on particular groups sourcing parts from sellers who offer worldwide shipping. Deciding on a project that enough folks can commit to in order to get a price break is the only factor to consider, perhaps including the possibility that a North American AA Inmate might be willing to act as an intermediate in order to forward a shipment to an international AA Inmate.

 Someone mentioned open baffle. Of course, Siegfried Linkwitz's excellent LX speakers immediately came to mind. In addition to the speakers, a certain amount of electronics and amplifiers (and associated cabling) are required. So, that could be an excellent potential project for a group buy, to bring the cost down a bit. I recently heard his system, and, really, it was excellent!

Fellow inmate Lee M built the LX speakers, and has several Parasound amps to drive them, and loves it.

 Well, this looks to be DOA. Too bad, I was thinking that some songs sound better through different opamps, so I was thinking that there should be an alternative method to select particular opamps so the rig could remain in place permanently. I am a resolution fanatic, but high resolution opamps sound bright on some songs. With this unit you could voice your songs to your taste. For example, I like to use The Beach Boys "Kokomo" to test for brightness, it just IS bright! With this device I could have a nice Burr Brown opamp for songs like "Kokomo", while other opamps throw a big deep sound stage, and still others emphasize bass slightly, etc. Oh well...
