This is a question to Marantz 10 B owners . I am in europe and my 10 B is working fine (after i wired it on 230 V and change the 75 microS filter to 50 microS) but i have a noise only on one broadcast, it is not hum i did not look it on a scope but i think it is a 500 Hz square wave form signal. This noise stop when i switch to mono mode and once more it is only on one station reputed for high quality, wide music bandwidth and high stereo separation. Does someone related the same thing ?

I may butcher this a little, but a 10b guru told me that it has quite a wideband and some stations broadcast something along with their normal signal way out on the edge and this could be a problem for a 10b. An average tuner probably wouldn't pick this up and some super tuners have a wide/narrow filter switch that would take care of it. Alas the 10b has no switch for this. Have you tried a cheap tuner? What does the multipath trace look like when on this station? I'll go back to cutting meat now.

Hi,

Thanks for reply, i have another tuner but is not really cheaper, it is a Mc intosh MR 71 ! no problems with it on this station but i have an external roof antenna with a 75 ohms cable. The 10 B have a balanced 300 ohms antenna input and i did not find at this time a 300 ohms shielded cable for a good antenna, the high sensitivity of this tuner make a good result even with a small inside dipole. I will take the time to make a tuned "balun" on this station ( 100 MHz) to match the roof antenna to the 10 B input . The multipath scope is not showing very bad reception on this noisy station : the spot is 7 mm wide above the center and have not a wave form .

I had a 10B that was "squealing" - turned out to be a tube in the multiplex section (don't remember which) - probably wasn't fully locking onto the pilot signal.

Rather than testing them, I find it's better (and quicker) to substitute known good tubes one at a time.

You're doing a good job of problem solving. The 71 is a great tuner. I don't think it's as wideband as the 10b. On "tuning" the balun, you might experiment with de-tuning it a little for the 100mhz station. Good luck.

Hi,

Thank you for the info, i'll remove the tubes of multiplex, test or replace, these are 12AU7 and 6BU8 of memory, no problem to find , not the same with 6JK6 !

Given that the problem went away when you switched to MONO-
The problem is in the MPX circuit- tubes are always the first culprit....
