Should an everyday fm antenna be raised off of a carpeted floor?

If the OP's talking about a dipole, it's also worth experimenting with horizontal vs. vertical orientation.

The "T" shaped dipole is also directional, having a figure-8 reception pattern, with the nulls at the 'tips' of the "T", so to speak.

A regular old "T" dipole can give excellent performance, but -- like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree -- it needs a little love to do so.

:)

all the best,

As Grinnell and mhardy6647 indicated, the higher the antenna is placed, the better.

Even if your roof was carpeted, that would still be the best place for the antenna. If your room had bare floors, that would still be a poor choice, but based on height, not materials.
