Scott 310E tweaks?

 I just swapped in a Scott 310E, and I am wondering if anyone has any suggested tweaks. It is pretty much stock with the exception of some increased capacitance in the PS, and updated coupling caps. Thank-you.

 I have a couple of 310Es, both of which need work at this point. The 310E is the only tuner I've heard a stereo image from. That is, not just separation, but an actual stereo image.

The 12DW7/7247 I think is out of production. It is half 12AU7 and half 12AX7. My suggestion is to use it until it fails, then engineer a solid state replacement, as the two 12DW7s just drive relays.

I would replace the 12AU7 with a better sounding tube, as it is in the audio signal path and the 12AU7 is not a good sounding tube. I'd recommend a 12AT7 or, if the transformer can handle the extra heater current, a 6CG7/6FQ7. You'll need to change the heater connections a little if you use the 6CG7/6FQ7 but other than that the pinout is the same as the 12AU7 and the gain is almost identical. The 12AT7's pinout and heater demands are identical to the 12AU7's, but the characteristics are different, so you'll have to reengineer the circuitry around the tube.

 Unfortunately it doesn't sound nearly as good as old stock, from what I've been told.

I wanted to build a Dynaco ST-35 clone, which uses the 7247 in the input stage, but changed my plans after hearing from someone how poor they sounded compared to his 1960s tubes.

 In the 310E the 12DW7 just drives relays, so sound quality is not an issue. That's why I recommend an eventual solid state replacement.

Oh, and I was mistaken, the 12DW7 tubes I mentioned are still made by JJ, not Electro-Harmonix.
