Help! I'm in the market for a good sounding portable radio. Suggestions? nt

I second the GE Superradio for good sounding AM and FM (mono only). I've been using the current version (III) for years without any problems at all. Usually retails for US$50-60. Both the AM and FM sections are good signal snatchers, and the sound fidelity is better than most portables. Has inputs for external antennas if needed in your area. Works off of 120 vac or six D cells.

Radio Shack has what looks like a clone under their Realistic label.

The II had hotter reception. Pulling power was better. Also the III had some variation in quality. Tuning indication accuracy was one of the issues.

I just tried to find you the best link but ran out of time. Try an internet search for the II and III. Their is a lot about them on the net.

It LOOKS like a GE, but it is way down on performance by comparison.

If you want a smallish, ie. large paperback sized radio, then I'd suggest the Panasonic RF-B60 It has AM, FM(mono) LW and SW. Digital tuning, VERY sensitive tuner+ 45 presets in a very portable package. And it was noted for its sound quality. That's why I bought one back in the day. Still bummed out that Panasonic dropped out of the World band radio market. The RF-B60 (and the later 65) sounds better than the competing Sony, and as good as the Grundig and is much easier on the batteries than the Grundig. (I speak from experience!)
If you just want AM/FM the GE superradio is good, it is a large radio and sounds good 'cause it has a large speaker. I too have heard that serious DX'ers prefer the II over the III.
Also, the Kloss-designed Tivoli PAL can run on batteries and is small.
Or, just buy a boombox and when it breaks next year buy another...

Make sure the power switch is in good condition when you buy a Superradio. These can even be damaged just taking the radio apart.

I did a google search and found several different web sites dedicated to the GE Superadio that mentioned the light duty switch. (What a terrible place to get cheap!).

I've decided to get the series II as you'd suggested. Thank you very much for sharing your expertise with me. I'm now certain that I'll have a decent radio with good reception at our lake cabin.
