I recently acquired an older Cary 805B which uses the tube compliment in the title. I find there's enough noise coming from the speakers (both equally) that I can hear it from my listening seat when no music is playing.

I'm not sure if this is just the way my 805 monos are or if one set of the tubes is contributing to the noise. I don't have any replacements available to me at the moment to see if any one set is causing the noise or not.

I do have two different sets of the 6SL7GT tubes en-route but as the other two tubes are a bit on the pricey side I'd like to get your collective experience concerning the tubes.

Are any of the aforementioned tubes known to be a bit noisy?

Thanks, and stay safe.

First, shop better for 6SL7 tubes; it is not an expensive proposition to gather enough to have a statistical assurance of getting enough quiet ones. And there's lots of 'em out there.

For me, my money is on the highest gain, early stage amplifier tubes, in this case with near certainty the 6SL7 as having the largest risk of being noise producers.

Is the noise a tube noise - like a rushing white noise, or ringing from microphonic?, or a spitting - sort of random?
Those would definitely be the tube - and most likely the 6SL7GT

Or, do you have a hum...?

Not sure how to describe the sound. Not pinging of any sort. It's not random. It's constant on both sides.

It's between a buzz and a hum sound.

I tried using PS Audio's humbuster but no help.

I've got the amps hooked up to a Running Springs Audio Maxim.

It was suggested by Cary to lift the ground. I've not done that yet.

Lifting ground silenced the amp.

Now, to try and figure out how to achieve the same result without a cheater plug.

Well, that was simple.

Good luck in the search for a more thorough fix.

I have a 20-year-old Cary 805C. The paper and oil capacitors in the signal path have been known to leak. I had to replace mine. See if you can get a technician to check out your caps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check and see if the local audio shop tech is able to check the amp out.

Purchase a pair of Ebtech HumX. It will safely eliminate the ground loop. The 805B power draw is within the safe limits of the HumX.

I went ahead and bought a Hum X and it solved my issues completely.

I think Morley makes them now (or also). Either way, it worked like a charm.
