One of the 7199s in my Sherwood S-5000 finally gave it up last night. It looks like it's time to rewire the sockets to fit either a 6U8, 6GH8 or 6BL8.

Does anyone have any preference between these tubes.

The Euro ECF80 / 6bl8 is an excellent tube. Amperex , Mullard even Telefunken made those.

I've had good results with TungSol 6U8 (original, not reissue).

A lot of 6U8's hum from heater to cathode leakage in the pentode section, old TungSols usually do not.

There are some 7199 to 6U8 adapters available, also so you don't have to rewire.

Rewiring is just moving three wires. Besides it looks like the 7199s are done and gone.

Yes, the 7199 has gone the way of the Dodo.

If you check Scott amp circuits, you will find that any of the 3 types mentioned will definitely do. FWIW, I have reasons to prefer the 6BL8.

An old story here on AA applies. Talk to Jim McShane and get nice tubes that will work.

If you are interested in a stop gap, there is a guy here in Phoenix that probably has some 7199's.

I'm just figuring that the 7199s are pretty much a dead issue. I REALLY like my Sherwood and the 7199s have always had an iffy tone in debates over sound. I figure this is a good opportunity to MAYBE move it up a notch to a 6BL8.

This Sherwood is kind of special to me. I can rewiring the socket which will allow me to roll and tweak a few other tubes. Where as with the 7199s you're kind of stuck.

7199 are not so rare as to be worth the trouble for another pentode/triode tube to stick in a single socket. Now if an EF184 and 6SN7 section are up for discussion...or maybe a 12HL7 and a 12A4...LOL

Like I told Mike S when he rebuilt my Sherwood,"just weld the cover screws on because I never want to see the inside of this stereo".

A few simple wire swaps I can handle. Reinventing the entire circuit - ain't gonna happen!

I love this Sherwood Just the way it is/was so the 6BL8s are close enough.

The 7199 seems to be available on eBay at $30-50 each or so. It's foolish to rewire the sockets and switch to a less linear tube type for this cost. The replacement will last a long time.

I stocked up on NOS Sylvania and RCA 7199 tubes, years ago. Very hard to find adequate subs, for those amps that take these.

I'm glad NOS or ANOS have dropped back to around $50-75, each. Prices were around $100 each for legit NOS... just 5-10 years ago.

Someone, must have found a hidden treasure box!

I decided to rewire the socket for 6U8 types but I'm buying a Amperex gold pin E80CF/7643.

Let me tell ya, as I was starting rewiring that socket out in the Arizona heat I WOULD have paid any price just to replace those tubes. But the job is done and the 7643s are on their way.

Arizona July heat would have had my CC out before the soldering was warm...or I would have carved it up to run something better by a long shot.

I still have some fresh 7199. But i also experienced that some
recent purchases is of questionable value, i've seen old pulls sold
as "NOS" and i have got noisy ones.

I'm reluctant to sell the bad 7199 i got from ebay, i think i have to
scrap them. I guess that's why they were so cheap. Watch out for such
tubes!, go for GB-1252 och 6u8/ECF82 instead and invest in rewiring the sockets.

Charles, there are some for sale on audioasylum trader for a okay price. 35 a pop. they should last years. I'm guessing the ones that wore on you had tons of use. Just grab em and worry about the rewire etc down the road if need be.
