No, check the data sheet.

The 6AB4 is 1/2 a 'T7.

I've used 6AB4 tubes in quite a number of DIY amplifiers.
Always had good results, and since that particular tube is not that popular in audio or guitar amps.....CHEAP (RCA, TUNG-SOL USA, RFT, etc.)

I've used 7 pin 6AB4 tubes in quite a number of DIY amplifiers, instead of 9 pin 12at7 tubes.

The data sheet tells the tale. The type resembles the 5842 and Russian 6C45П (6s45p). It's very high gm and intended for grounded grid UHF duty. I call tubes of this character "in box oscillators". To use such types in common cathode audio service, EXTRAORDINARY precautions against parasitic oscillation are necessary. Of course, the issue of microphonics is present.

IF parasitic oscillation and microphonics can be overcome, the EC86 should be excellent in a phono preamp's 1st gain block role.

Ok, thanks for the review. I am not good enough to know how the tubes electrical parameters translates into its role in an audio amplifier. I am gaining more knowledge but it is like learning a foreign language to me.
But, practically i don't like using tubes that require a lot of assistance ( or extra circuitry) to keep them from misbehaving. cheers, Dak

It really isn't too difficult to deal with these high gain/high gm tubes. I am running a TX-coupled linestage with 6S4Pi's in it, and have put 6S45's in it too. The carbon comp, 1/4W Xicon resistors from Mouser are quite effective.

I was warned early on that at some point I would encounter a situation that would leave me wishing I could break open the bottle and solder the stopper to the grid posts, but it hasn't happened yet...:)
cheers,
Douglas

Friend, I would not hurt thee for the world...but thou art standing where I am about to shoot.

Mine are Dead quiet {5842} driving the lowly 45 finals into 105 db speakers.

I have toyed with the idea of just clipping off the pins but is just too barbaric.
