Is there any way to visually identity a TFK 12ax7 vs 12au7 ribbed plate? I have a tube with absolutely zero label left except a tiny part of the TFK diamond label so I not sure what this tube is. I only have a Orange tube tester which isn't of much help but the tube tested "ok" as a 12ax7 by that tester. I only have another TFK ECC83 smooth plate to compare with here at home. So any help I'd appreciate

The grid wire is smaller on the 12ax7.

....the humidity of your breath will often show where the paint has shed off and will illuminate the original lettering. Or not.

Use the 12AU7 tube test settings on your tester. If the tubes goes all the way up the scale and almost pegs the needle, rest assured it is a 12AX7. If it tests normal,it's a 12AU7.

It worked on some of my no markings tubes. The effect lasts only a few seconds so you have to be quick!
