Does anyone know what topology was used in the George Wright WLA12/A line preamplifier? It uses a 6X5 rectifier, 6EM7 as a series high voltage regulator, and two 6SN7s for what his old website describes as the "voltage and driver stages."

Does "voltage and driver" stage have a particular meaning? Two grounded cathode stages perhaps?

I'm trying to understand the differences between common preamp topologies (SRPP, mu follower, cathode follower, grounded grid, etc.), and the WLA12 is the only one I've ever heard. Trying to match experience with book learning here.

Thanks!

Jeff

My first hifi preamps but one of my long term favorites. George Wright was so cool and nice. He would respond to my most lame questions back in the day.

High sensitivity, wide dynamic range, low distortion, and smooth frequency response. Pwk

Driver is typically a cathode follower.

I love George Wright stuff too. Many people would probably describe them as euphonic, but to me it just sounds so musical and vivid. It's hard to find used Wright components that haven't been altered, sadly.

"Driver is typically a cathode follower."

Do you think this would be an AC or DC cathode follower in the WLA12? AC would have 100% feedback in the CF stage, whereas I gather DC would have no feedback, right? Any idea what George would have used?

Most line preamp circuits I'm finding use DC CF stages.

I've owned my WLA12 for God knows how long now it will not leave my hands. George was special and is missed.
