I use an Aqvox Phono 2CI phono preamp. It has an interesting feature: output coupling capacitors that can be defeated/bypassed to purportedly offer better sound quality. The catch is this: the integrated amplifier (in my case) or preamp upstream apparently must have input coupling capacitors whose main function is to block DC (so I've read) if the output capacitors on the Aqvox are to be bypassed.

I've also read that with tube preamplifiers this DC blocking is not an issue (don't know whether this is true or not and why it would be, or whether tube based preamps or integrateds would actually have input coupling capacitors); anyone that comes forth can enlighten/educate me on this.

I'm using a Unison Research Triode 25 integrated amplifier and currently have an email in to tech support at Unison Research asking them if I would be able to bypass the output capacitors in the Aqvox without risking damage to the integrated or speakers, which is a possibility from what I understand if a) the Triode 25 does not have input coupling capacitors or b) it will be susceptible to DC if it does not.

Thanks for any info.

If the power amp doesn't have an input cap (and most don't) and you remove the output cap from the preamp, then the plate voltage (or cathode voltage) from the last stage of the preamp will be present on the grid of the power amps first stage tube and will cause that tube to fry.

And don't touch a disconnected interconnect otherwise it'll hurt.

Sounds a daft idea to me but maybe there's more to it.

The Triode 25 has an input coupling cap before the first tube.
HOWEVER, it does not have a coupling cap before the volume control.
What will happen is you will put significant DC voltage on the volume control. At first it will be scratchy when you rotate it, and eventually will damage the pot.
Do NOT turn off the phono coupling caps. This is a recipe for disaster, and is a dangerous feature of the Aqvox.

Yes, thanks. Unison Research did respond to me very quickly and told me the same thing. Will stick to operating as I have been.

Agreed. nt, posted on April 7, 2022 at 07:13:54
