I just got an amp for pretty cheap that has 4 of them in the power supply and i was wondering if they are electrolytic or PIO. the value of the cap is 4uf x 600vdc about 5" x 1 1/4" . The size would indicate other than electrolytic but i wanted to know for sure. regards.

Those are probably wax capacitors. They are often found on old lower cost scopes HV power supplies that don't use a second anode CRT at several KV. Like 1960s tube Heath and Eico units. 1200v is a popular value.

yes they should be replaced as they are about as bad as old paper caps

FWIW, the 610s I have test fine for both capacitance and leakage. Not sure exactly what's in them but a near exact duplicate by CD (same size/value/voltage) leaks oil when the case is breached. I've always assumed they were PIO caps designed for PS service where something better than electrolytic was desired.

They are done up in big aluminum cans with 2 axial solder lugs and a big nut for chassis attachment.
I just found a post in the "PHilco" forum where this poster says they are PIO and "probably still good". I will test them for capacitance and leakage and see if they are still ok. But, if anyone has definitive info please let me know. regards

That was my thought when i bought the amp, posted on July 14, 2017 at 15:44:49

The 4uf size is perfect for some tube rectifiers which have relatively small input capacitor values. Thank you for your input.

OK, those aren't what i was thinking (nt), posted on July 14, 2017 at 15:51:09
