A few not-too-distant projects I'm contemplating need a good quantity of 12AX7s. I'd like a workaround to the cost, so I ordered a few 6N2P to try. Do other users generally like the sound of these tubes? Is there anything significantly different (compared to the 12AX7) that isn't obvious? I see that the filament requires 6.3V on pins 4 and 5, and pin 9 needs to be grounded. Any other advice on their use?

The 6H2П-EB (6n2p-ev) is quite OK. Treat the triodes inside like an 'X7.

Time after time, the EB (ev) suffix proves important in Russian types.

Eli, I ordered the standard 6N2P. Is there more of a difference than the -EV being ruggedized?

E is code for longer life.
B is code for military.

6N2P is nice 12AX7, but its heater has 6.3 V option only. The extra pin is connected to electrostatic shield between sections.

I have used them in a friends Little Bear phonostage. We did a little tube rolling and we by far liked the Voskhod (rocket logo) triple mica tubes from the 60s. FYI, E does mean long life, V stands for special construction. As best I can tell is that the EV versions used special alloys or coatings over the non EV tubes.

Usually the triple mica tubes demand a premium, but I've found an auction that is pretty reasonable. Possibly the seller is unaware they are triple mica tubes (not all EVs are triple mica). Check out the photos and you can see they are indeed triple micas. I always buy EV tubes when I can, they also have tinned pins over the plain steel pinned tubes, so less problems with pin corrosion. The Foton tubes are usually the best of the Russian factories, and the 60's were the heyday of Soviet tube production.

I used them a lot when I first started out cuz they were cheap and subbed in for a 12AX7 just fine, same gain, but pass as much current as a 6SL7, in other words, more transconductance than a 12AX7 which logically should translate into better sound. I used 82K for the anode resistor, figuring it a good compromise for "in between" the proper value for a 6SL7 and a 12AX7.

IMO, they sound better than the 12ax7. I tried a 12ax7 once just to see and that was enough for me.

If you need a lot of gain, I would reach for a 6n2p.

OK, bought one lot. I think those will work well for me. Sure beats $15-up for nearly everything else. Thanks!
