I picked up a nice little Akai GX-4000D reel to reel deck this week. It was missing a few parts, most of which I found easily on eBay. The one part that I can't find though is the capstan sleeve to operate the deck at 7 1/2 ips. Can anyone point me in the right direction, or does anyone have one they would be willing to sell?

The deck came with a reel of tape, but Dogzilla didn't think it tasted very good. It must have been hip hop.

I know exactly what you're talking about - had a Roberts/Akai a long time ago which used that method for speed change. I suggest you post this at tapeheads.net.

:)

Thanks for the reply, but I was hoping to avoid signing up to another web site.

Parts donor unit is the easiest way. Akai is defunct. And hardly ever stocked parts in the USA when they were in business.

You are probably right, but I am not sure it is really a keeper anyway. It is a decent deck and works great at 3.75 ips, so I could probably sell it locally and get something else if I can't find a speed sleeve.

I have two TEAC A-2340SX decks anyway, along with a same-model donor deck that has saved my butt a few times. The Akai was a bit of an impulse buy, and I could still use it as a 3.75 ips deck if I decide to keep it.

Thanks for the reply.

Let's take this offline. The forum frowns on buying and selling here. I just sent you a message.

Not yet, but mail from the US to Canada could take a couple of weeks. I expect to see it next week. Thanks for checking.
