I found another Yamaha KX800U off of Kijijji for $90 Cdn. It looked like new, just a liltte dirty. I cleaned it up, cleaned the capstans and heads and did a side by side comparison eith my other unit. I'm happy to report that pitch and output levels were identical and that the peak meters displayed the same.

What echo?

I'd take the one which has the faster speeds, the wider tracks, the dual capstans, and the full logic transport control.

;)
