Hi All,
I have been building some car audio boxes lately for buddies of mine, and I have noticed that with the same 2 drivers, in the same 2 boxes, the bass can sound much different.
Setting up in a BMW 330, sending a test tone of 40Hz, I adjusted the volume so it read 80dB inside the cabin. I did the same in a Nissan Maxima. Both set the same. SO my proclivity is this. The meter sees the same tone, same sound, but you ears hear radically different tones.
Amplification is different in both cars. One a 350Mono "class D" Sub amp. and the other an "a/AB" 200 Mono Sub amp.
The 200 Watt was much more defined, and hade more of a presence. Compressing the cabin.
The 300 Watt. was blurry, and rattley, without the compression.
I would have done this in a home, but it was easy to do in the cars. Thosgh I have noticed this in homes. It just seems strange to me. I was going to hook up the amps to a dummy loas and see if they were clipping, but at that point my friends though I was crazy.
Any opnions on this?
~A~

Same drivers, same boxes, but different amps and different 'rooms'. The only result that would surprise me is if they sounded the same.

Keep in mind you measured the output only at 40Hz. You have no idea what noise and distortion you were hearing, but given the magnitude of the difference, you had a good amount of noise/distortion in at least one of the cars.
