Small room? Love elctrostat sound? try the MMG!

I just purchased a pair of MMg's to evaluate the possibilities of the 1.6's in my rather small listening room. I just wanted to say that if you're of the electrostatic persuasion and like that type of sound, these 500 dollar marvels should be considered. IMHO, they are evrything (above 50Hz) that the 1.6's are, and, if you take into consideration the differences in room size for the dealers's demo area and my own listening area, they are a much better match. A sub woofer is a must, unless you have an aversion to extended bass (is that possible??? *grin*). I discovered that they are'nt nearly as picky about placement and reflection as I had been led to believe although small differences in both can make for very audible changes. Without adding any room treatments (they're at the top of my DIY list now) the MMG's still out-performed my old speaks by a HUGE margin. The smoothness and that incredible detailing ability along with the superb imaging and depth of soundstage was everything in my home as it was at the dealer with the 1.6's. Unfortunate for the dealer, I probably won't be buying the 1.6's for a while - at least until I move into a larger, less restrictive house. So, if you're in the market for electrostats and have a sub-woofer and a relatively small listening area, check these puppies out - they may be the best under-1500.00 deal going. Just had to plut a great speaker buy!

Dear Allan,
You might want to contact Tazsmonn at: snookums1223@worldnet.att.net for his experience with subwoofers and amplifiers.

"Magnepans are not electrostats but quasi-ribbons..."

Sorry Erik - I was being too general in what I posted. The point was "if you like the electrostatic sound" - Here I should have inserted something to the efect of "and can't quite afford Martin Logans...etc" the check out the MMMG's. I was referring to the TYPE of sound planer speakers can produce which can approach a true "electrostaic" sound better than than a moving cone driver. Alot of bang for the buck! Thanks for the correction.

Is this MMG related or just general purpose?

Welcome to the club. Once you become enamored of maggies, there
is no going back. Enjoy!

They are wonderful speakers.

It is possible to go back.

I did.

Since I haven't gotten around to buying a good sub for my maggies yet, I would be curious to know what all you magnephans out there are using for a sub. This way I'll know what to audition when it is time. I like the Velodyne FSR-10 but this thing is $1000! I would be particularly interested in less expensive subs that can do the job.

I'm using an NHT SW2Pi. I also demo'd the FSR10 and the HSG10 and liked them both. These were not used with the Maggies however, so I don't know how they would do. I suspect just fine. One thing I did notice is that I need alot less volume on the sub with the Maggies than I did with my old speaks, which surprised me given the 12 Hz difference in the bottom end. My old speakers were rated at 38Hz. The crossover on the sub works well in my room at 50 Hz - another surprise since my other speakers blended well at 60Hz. Go figure!

Just got done looking at some pictures of some Dunlavys(sp?). Nicely finished. You weren't kidding when you said small miracles come in BIG boxes. 86 pounds per speaker!?(SC-III)

The bookshelf speakers have a reasonable efficiency for use with a flea powered tube amp. Hmmmmmm....no, no, I'm saving for bigger maggies.;->

Have fun,
Tom S.

I noticed that an area store carries NHT so I'm going to give them a listen. Is the SW2Pi the 10" 120 watt sub or is it the 8" 80 watt sub? I don't need to have a lot of bass. I just want to have some extension beyond the maggies so I'm thinking of the smaller 8".

The next model up weigh nearly 200 lbs. each.

Sensitivity remains a constant through the range
but impedence varies significantly

SC-1 7 nominal 4 - 10 min - max
SC-2 5 3 - 7.5
SC-3 4 3 - 5.5
SC-4 5 3 - 7.5

All that aside, they do sound damn good
when leashed to a quality tubed amp.

I'm sure you can attest to that. Actually those impedance fluctuations are better than maggies. MMG-4 nom. 3min-17 max@70hz. They still sound pretty good to me. Then again, I haven't heard many brands.

Have fun,
Tom S.

P.S. Over 300 pounds per speaker on the 5's!?

It's the 10"/120W. BTW, I'm not necessarily recommending it - I like to think of it as a reason to find a new one. Actually, it's a reasonable choice for the money if you get it on sale, but the Velodynes IMHO are both a better choice, though more expensive. For me, the main (and now irritating) difference was simple accuarcy - the velodynes were far less sloppy than the NHT - this is just an opinion about them - it's really only valid in my own listening environment. If it's possible for your dealer to loan you the different subs for a home demo, that would be the way to go - try before you buy.

Hi!, Allan, while not having a magnepan( i'm a big fan of them) i own acoustat ESL model two, my sub is a sunfire MKII, and i have noticed the same as you i need less volume in my sub( 2o'clock) and sure they blend very well, ( forgot to mention my prvious spekers were an infinity sub/sat sistem), i think that is because of the fine bass texture provided by planar/ESL speakers, opposed to the punch bass you get from box speakers.
Enjoy your music and system.

Yeah nothing changes on the Dunlavy cabinets except the depth and a little on the width. One midget and the rest could play in the NFL. It took some bulk to wattle around the IVs when DaveB and I auditioned them a while back and they only weigh in at a modest 190! ;)

... you must have been really bored (or ...

I find that the Velodyne FSR-18 integrates extremely well with
Martin Logan reQuests and SL3s. Perhaps the same will be true
with the Maggies.
