Friend of mine bought a used pair of wood Khorus locally this year and loves them.

Anyone remember the back story of the company, what their products were like, and the general vibe of them?

The same seller has a pair of Firebird for sale, and while I am content with my speakers...you end up thinking about these things you know.

Be nice to know more about the company.

I have two friends who currently own Talons. They seem quite pleased with no regrets. One replaced Sound Lab electrostatics while the other friend replaced Watt/Puppy 8's. In light of that, the Talons appear to be serious contenders. I believe they dealt with the original designer in a direct purchase. This all happened a few years back and I don't remember all the details or models involved.

IIRC, Richard Rives Bird's background was in medical device design, and it seems he went back there around seven years ago.

His Facebook page recommends Chris Huston for acoustical consulting... but I would not be surprised if Chris were retired now.

It seems obvious that Talon disappeared in all of that.

The ones I heard were a bit aggressive, but, that could have been the alluded-to break-in issue.

The photo above is from circa 2008. A younger version of me is on the right. My arm is around Chris Huston, who was John Lennon's best friend in art college, and who won the Grammy for producing The World Is A Ghetto.

ciao,

john

I remember when the Talon Khorus was all the rave among some reviewers (including some folks I knew).

I managed to get hold of the "stand mounted version of the Khorus" at the time. It sounded so utterly strange, so colored I thought it must be broken. I sent it back, was told, nope it was working fine. Then I saw the Soundstage Measurements for the Khorus:

Yup. Those measurements indicate what they sounded like to me. So I guess they weren't broken. Just a strange, colored house sound?

IIRC, someone from Talon Audio went on to design loudspeakers for Escalante Design (the Fremont and other speakers, all named after trees) after Talon was no more. I remember this from attending a RMAF show.
