Hi all:

I have a pair of DCM timewindow 1's and one woofer needs the voice coil realigned. I found a couple places who say they can do the repair if I send the woofer out to them,I just wondered if anyone had a strong recommendation in the NYC area. I'd love to go local if I could

Have you tried taking that woofer out, and rotating it 180 degrees? If gravity has just caused it to shift, rotating it can often give you quite a few more years, before REAL work needs to be done...

You can do it yourself, maybe the surround is worn out or rotting?.
Do the re-foam (shim the coil), you might get lucky.

Hi Coner:

The woofers have rubber surrounds that look pretty good, so I'm not sure that's going to do the trick for me.

So you then peel off the outer part off the rim, shim it,
glue it back on. Done it. If it's a VC/spider issue, may not work.

Back when Great Plains Audio was thriving they had serious shipping recomendations. Most of them focused on Don't!
Lots of shipping companies drop speakers and no matter how well packaged this can seriously damage and often irreparably destroy a driver.
Feeling Lucky?

It's a 6" woofer. Shipping seems to be my only option. I'll pack it as well as it can be packed. Right now it's barely functional anyway, so I have relatively little to lose.

Just rebuild some 8" Lowthers for an inmate, grit in the gap, separated
bobbin from cone, foam rotten, spider loose. No new parts except for the surround. Just repaired all the problems. Not many people do that, apparently. I would not buy such a delicate driver, myself.

I recommend my tech, Russ Barbone. He's done work for many highly satisfied members of this Forum. He works out of his home in Nutley, New Jersey, about half an hour by auto from Manhattan. His work is meticulous, his fees are reasonable, and unlike the typical tech, can't stand to have untouched or partially fixed gear cluttering his bench. His number's (201) 280-8254.

And would be Nowhere near as fragile as a say a 15" with a 10 pound alnico.

Might be okay with low powered tube amps, I get that. But
not impressed with adhesives used, and I'd want a more stoutly built
woofer.

I may get flamed for saying they're really not that modern but ...

when last I looked, they're really not

regards,
