Klipsch Cornwall II...worth getting if not updating?

Have a chance of picking up a pair in good shape locally for a decent price. I had a pair of earlier Verticals a while back, sold them, and regretted it. So I'm seriously considering these, but I don't have the time nor inclination to change the crossovers, or anything else. Is it still worthwhile to get them and use them as is, or are these speakers that must undergo updates in order to sound decent?

Depends on what your expectations and/or requirements are. They are fun speakers that are room filling and very easy to listen to, as you probably already know. I have owned a pair that I didn't update, and a friend now has a pair that have been updated with xovers and new diaphragms. If you don't need that last iota of detail and top end extension, they are fine as is. There are far costlier speakers to be had that aren't nearly as enjoyable in my opinion.

Best speakers Klipsch ever made. Not power hungry, always musical, what's not to like?

Thanks guys. Appreciate the feedback.

I'd love to get them but I'm second in line, so my questions might be a bit premature. If I am able to end up with them I'll bring pictures my next visit.

Really? These actually have risers under them so they're about an inch or so off the ground. Getting good, but not boomy bass. How far off the ground are you recommending?

....they do sound better when pulled out into the room. I know the name is corn WALL, and that's what it implies. But trust me on this. The way you have them set up now, they sound like a good pair of speakers. Pull them out at least three feet and they will sound like music.

I had a pr and loved them. It was in an unfinished basement as a third system. With a modded dynaco st70 and bottlehead preamp and phono section with a thorens td160.

Pulled out about 3 feet toed in slightly toward the center chair I would listen in.

I spent many hours with that system. It was that good. Imaging, clarity, bass impact all amazing. I could and should have kept that system. Pd $600
for them

I also recommend an area rug or two.....

Yep, sometimes you just don't know when you already have a good thing. Then move on to other things. Then take years to regain what you already had.

the position of the tall rack to the right is too darn close to the speakers and creating diffraction. I've viewed your gallery and see the challenge with that wall.

If only the lower stuff in the middle could be shifted down towards the speakers...

I do have a rug about 3-4 feet in front of the speakers. Table, couch just beyond that.

Will experiment with room placement. Have them pulled out now a couple of feet from the back wall. That's about as far as I'm willing to go. One of the things that my wife approves of with these speakers(and the Cornwalls I had previously) was even though they are big, they could be pushed away out of the room. And frankly, I've never noticed much difference with placement with the CW's, which is why I like them. Yes a little more bass is produced up against the wall/corner but not so much that it distracts from the overall presentation.

But a little experimenting is easy enough.

This is probably as good as it's going to get. I've moved the rack a bit further away, and the speakers are close to 2.5ft from the back wall, toed in. While I don't mind experimenting a bit, a good general presentation is all I'm after, and having been doing this for 45 years, I trust my ears on what's good and what's not. But I appreciate the opinions.

Try it and see.

Some say stands that a a foot off the floor work great. Some say stands that have a front face even with the front of the speaker work best.

Only know by trying. I used to have JBL 166 Horizons sitting flush on the floor for nearly a decade and someone suggested stands that raised them a foot off the floor and...

I realized that a decade of listening had been wasted. :-(

is that you swap the position of the rack and the four inch tall amplifier sitting beside it. :)

That "amplifier" is a PS Audio regenerator...So just swap the rack for where the PS Audio is? That I could do, and I just might. Thanks.

I've been using an old pair of Wharfedale W70 cabs as stands for both AR 3's and KLH Model Six's prior to getting the CW's. Those are about 3 feet up, so too high for the CW's. I do have a couple of old junk speakers around that I might be able to use as stands. But again the CW's are presently not on the floor but on 1 inch risers, and they sound very good.

That should really help with minimizing diffraction with the towering rack.

I'm thinking you're gonna hear a tad more focus now that the right speaker can breathe more freely into the room. :)

Would just like to give a high five to E-Stat & sberger in this thread for conducting an audio discussion in the way I always felt these discussions should progress. A question followed by an answer that challenged the OP initial mindset; followed by a polite explanation, the OP acceptance to try it and a happy enough ending.

When discussions follow this type of model they not only provide real anecdotal information but more importantly help to reinforce the reason most of us long time subscribers remain loyal members and develop friendships.

While I understand that snarkiness is a reply may provide the poster with some measure of instant gratification, it is an approach which is lossy in the end to both the poster and the Asylum community at large.

You're welcome. Likely not the kind of difference your wife will notice from the kitchen(!), but I find that every little bit helps. :)
