 After 20 years away from vinyl I am making my way back. I do not have a turn table or a set of speakers yet but do you have a receiver. As I begin to look at the speakers I suddenly realized that it is not exactly an easy thing to find the right match. I now know that I need to find the right sort of power alignment to match my receiver but the more I try to figure it out the more confusing it gets. As I read the specifications paid for my receiver I don't even know which numbers are important. I have a Yamaha R-S700. Not looking to spend a fortune. Any recommendations or advice?

 If I were you I'd go used. It'll be hard to find something under $300 that will sound decent in that big of a room.

 Hello and welcome to the forum. There's good advice aplenty here and I will try to make some suggestions for you. If I read the specs correctly, your Yamaha receiver has 100w/Ch which is likely enough power to get you started well.

Speakers are very personal things and it will be easier to make suggestions with some additional information, so here come the questions.
1.) Are you looking for an audio-only listening setup or do you want it to be part of home theatre?
2.) What is the size of the room where you want your setup?
3.) Do you know what kind of speakers you are willing to own? For example a small stand-mounted two-way, a large floor-standing 3-way. Are you interested in planars, which are often quite large or need a lot of space?
4.) Do you have a significant other whose furnishings sense and tastes must be accommodated?
5.) What kinds of music do you listen to?
6.) What is most important to you in that music--what do you care most about the system giving you?
7.) Do you want to limit yourself to new equipment or are you interested in buying used equipment?

If you can think through and answer these questions, I think you will get better help.

 any of the andrew jones designed ELAC speakers that fit your price range. the 100wpc you have will be well served with one of their floor standing speakers.

 You have an excellent receiver which will drive most conventional speakers very well. The IHF dynamic power (short term power) is actually spec'd down to 2 ohms, though I would not suggest it for 2 ohm speakers. I have one and it drives my 4 ohm speakers very well, and I have even used it a bit with my old PSB Stratus Minis, which are on the insensitive side. The tuner sounds fine, though I have not tried to see how well it would pick up very distant stations. Very much to the point for you, the phono preamp section is very fine.

You have not indicated how much you want to spend. PSB and Paradigm have some excellent mid-priced speakers, so they are a good place to start , or in my case, stop looking. But there are quite a number of fine speakers available nowadays.

I haven't looked for turntables for a while. My Rega P3 has an excellent tone arm which will rider over horrendous warps, but may be pricier than you want. It does not have stylus lift off at the end of the record, and I tend to think I would get a Denon TT with motional feedback for the tone arm which should ride over the warps as well, which would lift off the stylus at the end of the record. There must be some excellent second hand TTs available as well.

 I would heartily second the recommendation of PSB speakers. I enjoyed a pair of Stratus Golds for a good long time. When I sought a modestly priced speaker for a simple family room system or to give to my son, a pair of PSB Stratus Minis was an easy decision I have never regretted.

 These towers (and other Q Acoustics offerings) have been well reviewed in the UK and now they're sold direct in the US. I've got to say that they're a lot of fun and sound very balanced. I like them more than several other modest-cost speakers I've tried lately.

 I 2nd the Elac, very good performance for the money.

I would also look at direct sellers like SVS or Emotiva, in home trial with return option.

I also like what I've heard from the Martin Logan Motion series but not sure what price range they are in.

You might want to also audition/price the Golden Ear.

A lot of it depends on the kind of music you listen to. For a general recommendation I would say the Tekton M Lores would be a good match. They are very efficient 98db and sound very lifelike. Most all of Tekton designs are very efficient but I know of people that feed them 200 watts and up

 Find Buy a pair of Dynaco A25's ~200$ used.
Likely more audio than you expect.
Otherwise you wouldn't need to be asking... Twice.

 We have a pair of the old PSB Stratus Minis in the family room for use with the TV, mostly. They are wonderful on voices, very easy to listen to, no listener fatigue.

They are quite good on orchestral music but they are not as smooth as my main speakers, which is evident in a direct comparison. But for a lot of popular music and jazz, they are really hard to beat.
