If you can find a pair of Mission 700 series, the had ports in the front and none in the back.

I chose Vienna Acoustics Weberns for a home theater setup. They are voiced for a close to wall placement. These often show up used for pretty good prices these days. I also quite like their aesthetics.

Although a port placed at the fromt of a loudspeaker will allow it to be placed closer to the front wall than one with a rear port, the OP wants to place the speaker up against the wall.

This placement will result in a considerable hump in the bass response of a speaker engineered to be used in free space irrespective of the port. The OP will accordingly need a speaker that has been specfically engineered to work in his preferred location.

Naim speakers ( i.e. pre their merge with Focal) are designed to be placed against the wall as are those from Linn. That is at least earlier ones , I lost track of their output over the past few years. Speakers designed by Roy Allison are also to be used against the wall.

Other approaches could involve some form of EQ to remove the bass hump or using small speakers with restricted bass extension and a subwoofer.

How big is the room - what sort of bar - in a house or an actual bar with paying customers. What is your budget?

There is a lot of missing information because we can recommend $200 speakers or $200,000 speakers. How loud does it need to play? Are you going to use subwoofers - will they be wall mounted.

Generally speaking sealed boxes and front ported speakers work best in corners as do my rear ported Audio Note speakers (which are designed for corners). Many horn speakers do well in near walls as well.

The link is to my coverage, but do go on to read JA's measurements--I think it is fair to say he was pleasantly surprised.

I grinned from ear to ear at seeing the in-room measurement comparing the DA SS IIs to JA's reference pair of BBC LS3/5As...

Not shabby at all.

The speakers are now available in Oak, and look much better for it, IMHO.

Best of luck,

John

Sealed NHT, new or old, can work well in some near wall situations. The larger stand mounts plus floor standers.

You did not specify a budget.
Was at AXPONA this year and heard a pair on Audio Notes for $3k that were against the wall and sounded pretty good.

At least 1 sub will be in this setup. Probably looking under a grand used and yes it will be playing loud as I use this system to flood music onto the pool deck and out into the driveway when entertaining. I will eventually add a set of out door speakers for the pool deck but honestly the sound carries well from the location behind the bar.
The location of the speakers are not ideal but I do a fair amount of listening to this system.

The room is about 600 square feet (2.5 car garage) double doors to the side of the system which opens onto a pool deck and 1 window to the side of that.

The Vandersteen VLR or VSM-1 would fit the bill!

I would look into M&K professional speakers (George Lucas' favorite speakers) - they can go loud and sound good and durable.

Larson Speakers are designed to go right against the wall and sound good, the sound is also dispersed very well. The pair I heard had a suggested retail of $7k. There is a smaller model but I'm not sure what they cost.

Vandersteen is not exactly the type of speaker for a bar.

There is the Audio Note K/Lx which is $2k and is a sealed design and designed for close to wall (and or in corner position).

I had the higher model in the K/Spe (silver wire) and they sound really nice.

The K is happy with about 7 watts so that is a bit of an added bonus.

Allison speakers- no longer made - were designed for wall placement and in some cases corner placement. Roy Allison was a highly respected designer though his philosophy went against the grain of the current fashions. Linn speakers incorporate Allison's thinking in many cases.

I am told that you want the port in front if the speaker will be mounted against a wall. Makes sense.

Their designer Winslow Burhoe also invented the inverted dome tweeter long before Revel thought of it.

The Vandersteen VLR's work and are designed to be placed in a bookcase or against the wall. They also sound really good and are very fairly priced.

I'd find a pair of used ADS 510's or 400's and the like. Not subtle speakers so a nice sound for semi-outside listening. I'm assuming the pool music is not classical or jazz.

Also available in Maple, but not Oak, John, for $100 more (nt)., posted on April 26, 2017 at 21:42:17

The new Aerial Acoustics 5T is designed to be placed 2" to 2' from the wall. This is a small speaker and easy to place.
