Revel has sure bought some press or made sure the new Performa 3 series gets into a lot of reviewers hands. One such reviewer heard the F208 against the Studio 2 and I forget what other model on Revel's special comparison rig and said the F208 was as good, I've read other such comments as well. I finally got to hear a set of F208's compared to the much more expensive Salon 2 driven by a Levinson rig with a top Marantz Reference DAC.

You may already be getting bored with me being long winded so bottom line, the F208 is nothing like the Salon 2 in sound, different presentation and the Salon 2 kills the F208 in detail, as it should for the price difference. The Salon 2 presented music in a controlled and detailed manner. The F208 had ample and full bass, the type that radiates into the room and you can feel, gives up a bit of detail but I think most who listen to mainstream music would find it fun, vocals were natural and the highs extended. I would have liked to hear the F208 compared to a speaker closer to it's price just to see how the detail compared. The Salon 2 clearly outclassed the F208 in that department so those who are trying to sell a F208 as the poor man's Ultima is full of it. With that being said I think many might like the F208 sound, it's more of a fun presentation with a boogie factor, not so much discipline and control as the P2 series. Worth mentioning the F208 has what I can only describe as a dark background presentation that I liked making the F208 seem to have less glare, and I believe could be why the vocals sound so good. The F208's feature the boundary controls on back to help tailor the sound to different rooms and placements and has a front firing port, so the F208 should sound good most any place. I was also surprised by the quantity of bass coming from a front firing port. One other note regarding bass, and again, consider price difference, the F208 didn't go nearly as low as the Salon 2. On Jazz Variants from Ozone Percussions Group the Salon 2 created a virtual earthquake where the F208 was full there to a point, it was clear it didn't go as low.

I use F52's, will I switch to F208's, no. I personally prefer the more detailed and controlled presentation, in my opinion the F52's are closer to a poor man's Salon 2, same type of character just not to the Salon 2 level. Whether you like the F52 or F208 will clearly be a matter of personal taste, they are clearly not even similar, same can be said for the Ultima's, the F208 is a total different Revel sound in my opinion. I'd say sort of a hybrid combining Revel with aspects of JBL.

I agree, its a killing. I own the F52 and went and listened to the F208 and felt their was no comparison in bottom end, neutrality or presence.

I have had the F52s longer than every other speaker I owned since being a kid back in the 70's (Almost 6years).

They have replaced, just to name a few
B&W 801 matrix III
Magnepan MG3.6
Audio Physics Virgo III
Spendor SP1/2E
Von Schweikert VR4
and a dozen other speakers, they do everything right for me.

The only upgrade for me is the Salons or Maybe the Kef's

I've heard the M106, M105,F208 and the F206, Salon2's as well as the Studio's . The new series are not as good in my opinion. In fact, if a person can hear, you can tell right off the bat. But the funny thing about the new series....every review you read, its praising how good the new series are. I think they are paying the reviewers to lie about these series of speakers.

On several occasions, I have tried to like both the Revel & Aerial speakers.
The sound, is not what I read about in the Audio press?

I don't recall anyone saying the F208 is as good as an Ultima2. I think I did read the reviewer mentioned, and he came close if I remember. The F208 has a $50 tweeter for gods sake. I am sure it is compromised in a number of ways compared to the Ultimas. But I think we know how generous some reviewers can be.

Now as to the F52s, I haven't had a chance to hear them, so cannot comment on sound, but they would not look good in my (shared with my wife) living room. I think they were also originally priced a couple thousand dollars more than the F208 replacements. They had some new F52s in the showroom when I went to listen to the F208s. They were closing them out at 50% off which made them less expensive than the F208s. The F208s sounded very good, and looked even better so that is what I am listening to these days. They're not perfect, as they are not as articulate or lively as some speakers I've heard. Bass quality is harder to comment on since I think setup is more of a variable.

Btw, I tend to take with a grain of sand, comments people make on gear they own (unless negative). That includes my own.

Uh, not sure that last line will come across like I wanted. I thought Mr Peabody's points are all valid.

I try to be objective, whenever you see me give an opinion or choice it should say, "in my opinion or me personally". The Salon 2 should be better at 4 times the price of the F208, no shame there. F52 vs F208 would be a matter of taste as I feel they are different from one another. Now pretty much a moot point unless someone wanted a F52 bad enough to buy used, where actually they are a bargain for what they sell for used.

I listened to the F208, and owned the f52 and salon1 at the same time and have to give it to the OP for describing what I hear. I hear the f208 lean towards foot tapping while the f52 is more analytical, imaging hands down goes to f52. In comparing the f52 and salon1 I can only say the speakers were limited by source components. My anthem 225I is competent enough but not enough to wake the beasts so the 2 sounded more similar than different, a later listen with the hegel H360 showed much more of the musicality of the salons but the f52's were sold by then. If one can't afford something like the hegel they (myself) would get as much pleasure from the f52, I however am upgrading and the salon is more everything, imagine how much better the salon2 must be? I tell myself i've done too much ear damage over the years to control my desire for more.
