I just listened to $45,000 speakers, and…

They were the Janis (sp?) horns. I listened to them at Brooks Berdan Ltd. In Monrovia, CA. Fired up by Janis pre amp and 22 wpch tube amplifiers. Cardas connectors. He played a jazz piece for me.

Cosmetically, all the Janis equipment was gorgeous. Shined stainless steel cases, beautiful wood and artistic design on the speakers. Huge midrange horn, bass was (2) 15 inch woofers facing each other (hidden in the wooden base). Efficiency was 100 dB

I thought it sounded nice, mellow. There were no other speakers in there to compare it to. He said he sold three pairs during the past year. Brooks is a nice guy, and well respected in the local audiophile community.

I will admit that I did not feel the urge to move the Martin Logan reQuests I had to the rear channels, my guess is that they would have kept up with them pretty well. But I had to appreciate the art and craftsmanship that went into them.

They are a French company. I have the feeling that tube lovers are cultish. I am still in the “immature” solid state phase.

Anyway I just thought this was interesting.

.....so you got a chance to listen to the Jadis J1 horns at $45,000 a pair. I bet the amplifiers were their 20 watts per channel SE 845 that retail for a whopping $20,000. As these are the only amps they make around the 20 watt range besides the 10 watt SE 300B. Was the preamp the JPL MKIII by any chance?

Yes, Jadis sounds like it. No brochures and it was dark in there.., posted on March 10, 1999 at 20:10:56

Thanks for the correction. The pre amp was a shiny polished stainless steel beauty, with gold plated knobs.

The Jadis Horns. Never heard them-huge monstrosities tho-they look like Yosemite Sam.:-) Been told they're not that great, at least for the price. Yes, Jadis gear looks good, with the chrome and gold. They are also hard wired and the transformers are hand wound. What makes you say tube lovers are cultish?

I laughed when I saw you refer to them as "yosemite sam"! Yes, those are the speakers, although a "later version" (no moustache).

When I say "cultish", I am thinking about the small niche of people who go back to the days of tubes and vinyl. Like the groups that take a 1950 car and soup it up, or Harley Davidson owners. Perhaps the word cultish is negative, how about "a tight knit group."

My feeling of a cult thing comes up whenever I am in an environment where tube equipment and vynil is played. There is always the same 3 instrument music being played, with some guy plucking, and then another guy on a violin or horn. The lights are dim, there is no other furniture in the room, and there is a single seat in the center of the room. The amplifiers rest on the floor between the speakers, with the glowing lights winking at you. The tube owner stands behind you the room, his presense felt but out of sight. There is no conversation, it is a holy and mystical moment. After the 3 mintue song we return to our normal lives.

I'm not quite sure where you get your impressions from, sincemost of my musichasmore than 3 intruments in it.

>>> The lights are dim<<<
That really IS the best way to critically listen-less distractions.

>>. there is no other furniture in the room<<<

Maximizing room accoustics can be benificial, but one doesn't have to remove all the furniture.

>>>there is a single seat in the
center of the room.<<<
Must be a rather lonely person you know.

>>>. The amplifiers rest on the floor between the speakers, with the glowing lights winking at you.<<<
would you prefer a refrigerator? maybe acouch between the speakers? or would you rather watch a Tv thats between the speakers?

>>>The tube owner stands behind you the room, his
presense felt but out of sight.<<<
Yuck!-you seem to know some creepy people.

>>>There is no conversation,<<<
personally, I prefer not to talk during serious listening session-do you?perhaps you don't like serious listening?

>>>it is a holy and mystical moment<<<
It can be-thats the purpose of this hobby, or should I take it you are just a casual listener? These gross over generalizations also apply to audiophiles of the solid state persuation as well.

Jack: Please don't get carried away. Perhaps I was sounding too whimsical. I was just describing how it felt to me. I realize that you guys are very serious, and do not like to be taken lightly.

Anyway my experience is limited to "demos", and this is indeed the correct way to eliminate distractions. My home expereince and listening at my friends houses is much more chaotic and interupted.

I love music (and home theater) too! Tube people do not seem to get into HT much, or am I wrong again? Just a different preference.

<> I don't think so! How about, "a group of audiophiles that have a high degree of sensitivity to musical nuance and performance, while suffering from unsually keen and perseptive hearing, which demand a higher level of timberal fidelity to the acoustical event?" Seems a more accurate description of the situation (at least when considering the vinyl portion of your "cult"). :-)

Those darn generalizations. Tube folks might not approve of combined music and HT system, too many compromises, but it doesn't mean they might not have a *separate* HT system ;)

And musci was meant to be enjoyed together. My room has seats for many more than one.

>>>Anyway my experience is limited to "demos"<<<

Then how can you make such sweeping generalizations? How and why do you make such gross stereotypes, if you have no experience with tube owners outside of Demos(in stores I assume)?

Jack:

Lets stop this. I was making a comment based on MY FEELINGS. But I have nothing against the tubists and their music.

It does not bother me that you don't prefer my style of solid state mega watt gear.

The "sweeping generalizations" you accuse me of making is merely idle chit chat. Like asking why restaurants don't let you put in your own pepper.

Please continue to enjoy your gear, and if I can think of anything interesting to say I will let you know. I will stop poking a little fun at those who stare at the orange glow. I have no axe to grind!
