I was trying to buy an SME V yesterday, and saw this ad in Audio Asylum. After responding, it was quickly taken down. After some email discussions (as someone else had fallen out, he said) the conversation below ensues. He has prior fraudulent transactions using his name on the account as noted in head-case. Buyer beware.

Hi willy,
Well if you are sure it's ok.
I saw the word PayPal, and wasn't sure if it would work for me because I don't use PayPal.

In which case, the details you need are

Sort code 20-25-36
Account number. 805711792

Regards
Rob

Hi Bob,
I was, but then I looked at Xoom, which i use to send money with, and they are now a paypal company. Using this will transfer the amount and only cost $4.00 to me. A bank transfer is $34 with Bank of America.

The only thing I am not sure of is the part with the account number and sort code. This is much easier all around, and a lot less expensive, and will not need you to do anything.

Thanks,

Willy

Hi

The advert was £1000 uk pounds. Not US dollars
I've never seen or heard of Xoom service before
The information I gave previously was for international transfers. But this service that you are using appears to operate in the UK and only requires the UK to UK details?
I seemed that you were going to go to your bank and give them the details I gave you. I'm not really sure how Xoom works

Hi Bob,
Not sure was the original ad for $1000? just going through the screen to send you funds, could you help with this? I want to make sure the account number and sort code are correct, and once I have the final number for the shipping and insurance will send it to you later today. You should receive it by tomorrow morning at the latest.

Willy

Hi Bob,
I understand. We can declare the 1000 pounds which was on the original ad? That way we can insure for the same amount, and that would be square all around. I will go to my bank branch this afternoon and send the money, as needed. Oddly enough, I've never sent money this way before. Let me see if there are other ways to do it, as well.

Tell me the amount with shipping and insurance for the arm, and that is the amount I will send plus the fees. I will also use this email adderss (Karnevil9@gmx.com) for the transaction?

Thanks,

Willy

Hi willy

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I've been away from home on business
I don't have a PayPal account. I did enquire about it, but the customer service representative I spoke to said that because it would be a brand-new account they wouldn't be prepared to allow large sums of money to pass through it. They want to see a history of smaller transactions to start with. So it didn't seem worth the hassle of setting A PayPal account up.

The info you need is as follows

- IBAN account no.: GB67BARC20253680571172

- name of account owner: Vingel patanao & ROBERT WOODHOUSE
Vingel is my wife, and she is the lead name on the account.
If only one name is required then please use vingels name

- bank name: BARCLAYS BANK

- bank address:

Market Cross ,
Stratford-Upon-Avon ,
Warwickshire
CV37 6AP
UNITED KINGDOM

- bank identify code (SWIFT): BARCGB22

My home address

Cotswold view
Four pools
Worcestershire
Wr11 4tj
United Kingdom

Anyway, feel free to give me a call and have a chat. My number is 0044 7729369942

If you need any other information just let me know. Feel free to call me any time.
And if you would let me know what value you would like me to declare on the customs form that would be helpful. The full UK retail price of the tone arm is £2350. To declare this amount would give you full cover, but the import costs would be very high I guess.
Anyway if you could advise me of your wishes then I can fill out the decoration accordingly.
Regards
Bob

Yeah, the address he gives for his home looks fake too. Four Pools is an industrial estate in Evesham, Worcestershire and the post code he gives is for Norton, Evesham which is another district. So no good anyone trying to turn up for a confrontation.

BTW list price for an SME V in the UK is not £2300 but £3025. A grand might be considered a little low now for a used one in "A" condition if of recent vintage. Scammers usually underprice to attract - that's another clue.

Yes it always takes two for a scam to work. The scammer and the greedy individual who thinks they are going to get something for nothing. Usually don't feel sorry for those that fall for these types of scams.

If it is too good to be true.........

You are right, it takes two, or as a favorite old film star once titled his movie, You can't cheat an honest man.

With his movie con man character putting the finishing touches int he movie, as he gives life advice to a young dummy, "You can't cheat an honest man, and never give a sucker an even break.
