New ebay scam

Yesterday, 6 hours after being one of the losing bidders on a pair of JBL C50 speakers, I received a second chance email that said it was sent from the seller through ebay because the top bidder had passed and I could buy it at my submitted bid (over $2K). It had working links to ebay, all the logos, etc. The thing that made me suspicious was that the email address was different from the original, which I only noticed because I had sent the seller a question earlier. I contacted the seller and he confirmed that he had not sent it and that it was no doubt a scam. I was tempted to play with the sender and respond, insisting on paying at the time of pick up, but there was really no point, so I reported it to ebay and deleted it.

So look out, ebay bidders. This was really well done.

the scam-s would end if the seller was paid only after product arrived to buyer, and funds were held from e-bay as well until so.

It's incredible how much fraud is going on at Ebay and AudioWeb..., posted on October 15, 2004 at 10:13:37

Look at the listings on Audioweb and you'll see just about every other listing is from a 'int' (international) seller offering equipement for insanely low prices. They always want bank wire transfer as payment.

even before the "international" cartel moved into the business. I had found and forwarded several different scams and forwarded them to Audioweb. Audioweb did nothing about it. I called the manufacturers of the gear up. After talking to them, i saw that the ads were pulled down pronto. I don't know if they contacted Audioweb and / or those posting the ads, all i know is that Audioweb on its own was irresponsive. Sean

All the more reason not work outside of Ebay, posted on October 15, 2004 at 09:48:21

Glad you caught that. One should not buy outside of ebay, and that's what you would have been doing had you fallen for it. Even if this was legit, you'd have no recourse through Ebay (though I understand they don't help much anyway).

That said, I just sent a guy $75 for a record that was a Buy It Now, but I didn't go through Ebay. I had asked the seller a question about the item and he yanked the listing so nobody could snag from me while we were conversing about the item. Get the feeling this will be ok and didn't want to trouble the guy to relist with the But It Now. If I get screwed, then I've learned my lesson and won't do it again.

...with regard to yr $75 purchase, if it's not the rather sneaky scenario posed by the original poster, you should have a good idea of what kind of person you're dealing with based on their feedback.

Yes actually the second chance is normally sent through, posted on October 15, 2004 at 11:40:41

ebay and the seller gets charged additional fees. That is what makes it such a smart scam. Won't come up on anyone's radar screen and seems quite legit.

and don't forget that the familiar "you need to update your account information" mails are still coming in. just got one today. the newest wrinkle is that somebody supposedly has tried to access your account from several different machines and bla bla bla.

That one might have gotten me. I suppose we are protected if we use a credit card, but I sometimes pay directly out of my account through paypal and I have heard that getting your money back can be a bit of a nightmare. Good to know.
