What are the sonic differences, power aside, assuming each biased to around max dissipation?

Thanks

What kind of metal?

The plate needs to absorb electrons so i would look for the best electron absorber.

I was kind of looking for a more theoretical answer.

I like the sound of my graphite plate 801As. Not sure if its all due to plates. Class A2. It sounds great.

err, the best electron TRANSFER would be silver... not possible... tungsten handles the heat better than most anything, therefore boils off the electrons best. Thoriated tungsten being the next best thing.

Addendum: My graphite plate 801's have a 'softer' sound and better used in pre-amps for my taste. Perhaps graphite adsorbs vibration?

Hi Paul, it doesn't sound like any of the other replies bothered to answer your question-SONIC DIFFERENCES. My experience with metal plate is very limited because my amp is self biasing and the metal plates were turning cherry red but during the short time I had them in they were a bit sharper sounding than the run of the mill Valve Art's I had in at the time. The newer premium 845's will still give you that extra detail without the sharp edge that I heard in my system with the metal plates. Let me repeat that MY SYSTEM. Budget depending you can't go wrong with the Psvane Treasure series or WE 845's. Good luck, Will

In my system the "WE"845s died pretty early (a year) and one of the 2 replacements flatlined (on a curve tracer) even sooner. I haven't read about others having bad experiences with these, but I sure did.

Dave! I remember you from the Olden Days.

Still running Gallos, by any chance? I bought a pair of Ref 3s recently and they get closer to my ESLs than any box speaker.

Nothing really changes.

Hi Paul. i'm not only still running Gallos but several years ago I went back to the original Brooklyn-built Gallo Nucleus Ultimates, circa 1995.
Too bad Anthony Gallo seems to have disappeared from the scene. His speakers were -- and are -- really special.

Still driving mine with the same 845 SET monoblocks I've had forever (designed and built by a friend) despite the "impossibility" of running these speakers with either 12 or 18wpc SETs --depending on whether the designer (12 wpc) or David Berning (18 wpc) is talking :-)

What graphite really does is give us a
connection from plate to metal supporting
rods that is imperfect as a conductor (it's
a loose assembly, not a welded connection),
and this somewhat faulty connection tends
to do 2 things:

(1) create diode effects, and (2)
create varying resistances in the connection,
which vary according to temperature effects
and power driven pulse effects.

This, sonically, tends to soften pulses,
change frequency response during pulses, and
add effects that are not in the music being played!

In general, graphite plate tubes sound "softer",
etc.

They're high-heat tubes, not Hi-Fi tubes.

Personally, I consider them a kind of electronic
sponge-- Bounty Towels anyone? Variable euphonics maybe.

Why would there be a diode effect?
I have not seen carbon -metal diodes till so far.

Is in your opinion a crimpconnector also not good?

The current state of new tubes is that Molybdenum is used as the anode material. This is also a very difficult material to weld just like graphite, but does this make it a bad anode material? Bad contact, temperature dependent?
Some people say graphite is not *suitable* as a anode material, but the reasons they give are not always correct. Graphite is better at absorbing electrons than nickel just like molybdenum.

*Where the diode effect comes from is not made clear and the question is whether it is true. Probably it is not.

Paul, how many 845 tubes do you need for your amps? I had a quad of Psvane WE845 tubes, but about 3 years back now we had a hurricane and I needed to remove the four WE845 tubes, wrap the Mastersound up well in plastic and roll it to the safest place in my manufactured home.

When the hurricane passed we came back home from staying with friends. I then took all the plastic off of the Mastersound, replaced the four WE845 tubes, and fired the Mastersound up. I immediately heard a horrendously loud hum that after some playing around I realized was one of the WE845 tubes that must have gotten damaged during the storm somehow.

I say all this to let you know I have three remaining WE845 tubes and for all you've done for me in the past with the Beauhorn speakers, they are yours if you want them, no charge! Just send me an email...
