Well after many years of service, I knew the day would come when my SV300Bs would cry uncle. One of the tubes developed the loud crackling noise upon start-up that has been reported in the past. And last week, the other tube just gave up during playback. My pair are dated 1998, so 22 years of on and off service should be acceptable.

One of my Jupiter HT beeswax coupling caps also got taken out.

Now, I'm not 100% sure whether the cap died first, taking out the output tube, or the other way around. Either way, I had to replace both the output tubes and coupling caps.

I replaced the Svetlanas with the Full Music Globe Perf plates, from my tube stash. And the Jupiter caps were replaced by new Mundorf Supreme Silver/Gold/Oil caps.

The sound presentation changed from relaxed, mid-rangy, detailed and spacious to a more up-front, dynamic and cavernous sound. I can understand why some users would accuse the Full Music tubes of sounding "hard." According to some write-ups on the Mundorf caps, they need a couple hundred hours of break-in, so I plan to keep the Full Music in place while the caps "age".

I just ordered the JJ2A3-40 since I have been interested in this 300B replicant for a while. From reading the boards, the closest I would get to the SV300Bs are the Takatsuki 300Bs (or wait out for the WE if they ever start production again).

Anyone get a chance to compare the SV300B to the Takatsuki?

I'm guessing a leaky coupling cap is what took out the tube.

Surprised your Svet 300B lasted that long, posted on November 21, 2020 at 10:01:30

I experienced 100% failure rate with Svetlana 300B's in far less time period.
Otherwise, I really loved its sound signature as you described.

Also, jupiter beewax cap and Mundorf silver/gold/oil cap sound completely different, so you can't really compare the sound of tubes with this cap change IMO.

I have Takatsuki 300B, too, but it will not sound like Svetlana, either.

Agree. Years ago, my two pair Svetlana 300b last for less than 5 months.
It did sound very good.

I had a electroharmonix 300B that went open filament, not sure if thats common death mode or not. fwiw, using JJ 300B, and they are crazy robust and just beefier. sounds great.

To break in the Mundorfs, solder some leads to a plug; then plug them into a wall socket for a few days.
