I have several SE 2A3 and 300b amps.. All of em have a very quiet CLCLC low dcr power supply with no electrolytics and a single stage voltage amp/driver tube.. A 2A3 DRD amp using a 6J52P driver tube and James JS-6123HS outputs.. A 2A3 cap coupled using a 6C45P or a D3A with Tango XE-60 3.5S outputs... And a 300b amp using a D3A or 6J52P tube and Hashimoto A-115 interstage trasnsformer with Hashimoto H-20-3.5U outputs.. All 3 amplifers sound very very good in my opinion big, open, clean, detailed, and quick, and surprisingly similar.. I really like the DRD and was thinking of using a DRD 45 but instead of an output transform i was thinking of driving a Tango NC-20 interstage to drive an 845 tube???

DHT to IT to 845 ,is the way to go !!
2 stage is very good ,if not 3 stage.

Thanks Willie! I've found that I way prefer a 2 stage amp to a 3 stage... I haven't been able to get a similar sound from any combination of tubes I've tried using in a three stage amplifier (and I tried a whole lot) in comparison to a simple 2 stage.. Mark

I only have (2) 3 stage amps ,a Single section Triode 6SN7 Directly
coupled to a 2A3 I.T. coupled to an 845,it sounds pretty good. But not
as good as any of my 2 Stage amps.

The other 3 stage 26 cap coupled to a 26 and Directly coupled to a 45.
This amp is all DHT and all AC filament heated. This 3 stage is very
competitive with any of my 2 stage amps,

Willie

I've always wanted to play more with a 26 tube.. I do have a tranformer coupled 26 line stage I built years ago.. What are your 2 stage amplifiers Willie?

You will need gain into the 45 as the 845 really needs to see some voltage to get it started.

My first commercial SET was the Sole 5691->300B->845. It was big and heavy but man did it drive anything. 25W I was using ProAc Response 2's back then and thought the idea of making a sub 25W amp was silly. Before SET I made El34 and 6550 PP amps.

Then I was at a HAM tube fest here in Cincinnati and Mike Marx sold me a quad matched set of 45 tubes. I made that amp in Sound Practices the CCOS which was a ECL86/6BM8 using the Triode as the gain directly coupled to the 45 grid and then the pentode portion of the 6BM8 was setup as a constant current that biased and lifted the 45 to match the triode. It sounded great into the ProAc's and that changed my whole way of thinking. I stopped making the Sole (well the design was stolen as well) and started on the Cardinal 300B and the Bugle 45 amp.

I still use 45 or VT52 amps in my home system. Except right now I have a pair of custom silver wound 300B amps I made on a wim.

Thanks,
Gordon

The 845 is going to need ~1/5th of B+ to drive it well enough to justify using it vs a smaller tube. If you decide to get into the positive grid current arena, a driver that can deliver that large signal, and deal with the variable load a positive grid delivers is also an issue that will need attention.
