Hello all;

My ever faithful Hogan amp is having some issues and I'm hoping someone know a good tech that can service it around the Baltimore area. I'm certainly open to slight travel around Maryland or DC. Thanks in advance .

What issues are you having?

As you know, John's amps were unique and so be careful about who you let work on it in case they want to 'improve' it.

You may have to wait until the stay-at-home rules are lifted.

Hi Ray and thanks for the response.

The amp picked up a hum and has almost a reverb type of sound coming through.

I cleaned all the switches and pots and tried switching all the tubes out to no avail.

This happened over a year ago, I swapped it out with another amp, but really miss the silky smoothness of the Hogan.

At some point I called a few folks, but no one seemed to really be able to give me the confidence to bring it in for the exact reasons you suggested.

100% have no issues waiting until this insanity is over and I sure hope it eventually is over.

If you have any suggestions I would be happy to hear what you think and thanks again for responding.

Jack

oh yeah...'improve' it...:)

It is what it is because of what it is. The usual rules do not so much apply...:)
cheers,
Douglas

I would keep it on the bench until you can get it serviced. When they 'splode they make a mess and tend to wipe out transformers.

Both channels having the same issue?

I have been exchanging messages with Jack and he has sent me some photos. When the virus restrictions are over I will travel to his place to do some measurements.

It has been interesting to look at what John did. He fitted a quart into a pint pot and some parts and wiring are obscured. Fortunately, the caps are in plain view. There is also a power resistor on one of the hum pots that looks suspicious.

In any event, I plan to produce a schematic with the values that John used. From what I can see so far, the amp is similar to a JE Labs 300B deluxe. It has been interesting.

I will never understand how he used such wide ranging tubes in a SET amp with PP OPTs. I listened to his setup in his basement. Really a beautiful sound. A lot of texture. It was memorable. Really a nice guy. I use AZ1 rectifiers whenever I can because of him.

Ray, I can't tell you thank you enough for your emails so far. As a complete dunce at electronics I've learned quite a bit of the basics trying to make sense of some of the comments.

Looking forward to this state of emergency to someday be over and hoping to cue up an LP to listen too on the Hogan.

Geo, thanks for sharing that with us. Texture and a certain warmth is how I hear it, so well said.

I had a very "hip" uncle, mind you I'm in my 60's and he is long gone, but we would go visit and he would always put on music in his hi-fi for me. I would just sit and daydream about all the things kid's daydream about. But I loved the sound and realized years later that was the sound I had been looking for. He passed many years ago, but my aunt is still alive and had tons of pictures, so I went through 100's of them looking for the equiptment he had. He had a McIntosh setup with Klipschorns.

When I went to see the Hogan at vman71's house, btw I found it on this site, the second I heard it, it brought me back to that place. The Hogan is paired with Cornwalls and for me the sound is perfect.

I had that amp for 5 years, but mine used the 26 as the driver and the 6SN7 was in a separate chassis as the line stage. I thought it sounded great.
