I found little about his amplifiers and would like to know how his 2A3 and 45 amplifiers sound. I am thinking about a 45 one. Would like to know build quality, price, and such. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

I have had a 2A3, PP 47 and a SE 45/VT52/183 that James built for me. They are all excellent and high value for the money. I highly recommend James. He rebuilt a PP 6L6 for a friend and he loves that too. He also built me a full function 12B4A preamp.

Many thanks Geo for posting these. They look great. Love the meters. I plan on getting with him soon, maybe after Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you and thanks again for your help.

You get a lot of great sound at a reasonable price.

You have a very fine setup Geo. I am looking foward to getting started and get the ball rolling. I may have to go with a meter myself. Thank you.

What combination of tubes are you using in your amps such as rectifiers, drivers, and power ?

Merry X-Mas. I use KC1 as input and the 112A drives the output tube which is either a 45 / 183 or VT-52. I like 183s best but have note tried the solid plate EML 45s yet. In the pp amp, its 417a and tpye 47s.. as for the rectifiers, they are 6AX4.

Photo is of: 5687 SRPP input / 12B4 driver / 300B output

The 12B4 is a great driver! I use this one as an integrated w/cd or with preamp for phono. This one is Mr. Burgess' own design. A few months ago, I took this amp to a local expert/friend of mine and he had a blast looking at this thing under his scope. Bass performance at half power is incredible. Far exceeds what my Altec 19s can produce in the nether regions.

I also have a 5751 SRPP / 45 or 46 amp that is a much cheaper build on a Hammond chassis with Transcendar transformers. Sound is also fantastic and I'm in no hurry to upgrade the transformers.

Mr. Burgess is a true gentleman and completely honest and trustworthy. He also has a great ear though he won't admit to it.

I'm very grateful for those who helped me get in touch with him.

Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas :-)

Hi Plinko and a very Merry Christmas to you. Thank you so much for your input, for posting, and help. Man, those are very nice. Yes I can't wait to talk with James on doing some stuff for me. I have swapped a couple of e-mails and just waiting on him to send me his phone number.

Thank you again.

Hi Plinko,

There appears to be dual rectifiers hiding behind the power tranny in your posted picture. Is that so? If so, what tube-type is being used for rectification??

And, what Hammond power tranny model number is being used?

Nice looking execution. Are any chokes used below deck? If so, what types?

Power supplies always fascinate. Thanks.

Take your design concepts elsewhere...those are 6AX4 damper diodes.......(more than likely) He knows more about power supplies than you could imagine.......

And a couple of 10H chokes underneath, if memory serves. Don't worry GEO, there isn't a thing that is going to be changed in this power supply.

I was thinking of havine another preamp built but I may have a either a SE 50 or a PP 2A3. I am leaning toward a Class A PP 2A3

hey Geo,
What sort of topology are you looking at for the next amp? Got a similar one in the que and would compare notes with you.
cheers,
Douglas

Wright Sound AU-15.

The high cost of vintage 2a3s has kept me away from 2a3 amps though I probably would like to try one again. The cost of tubes seem far different from reading the archives from nearly ten years ago.

Catfish, James is the man! The real deal! You have to know what you want to a degree because just like anybody he'll fill in the blanks with what he prefers at the price level you give him. I just upgraded my J. Burgess 45 with some v caps and it's absolutely in another league!

Geo,

How do you like the sound of the PP 46 amp. Can you describe the sound so I have an idea how PP triode sound compare to SE. Does it give you that SE magic... Thanks.

Hi GEO,

You got a wonderful setup, great!

I viewed your picture gallery and noted you have Don Allen's 45 as well along with James. I am sure both 45's sound great. Since you have both can you give more info on Don' 45 compare to James.

I am interested in getting one SET 45 myself, I am planning to talk to James or Don.

Thanks,
Selv

GEO,

I have a lead on a James Burgess PP 47 amplifier and wanted to quickly inquire about your thoughts on the PP 47 amplifier (given that you owned a selection of James's amps).

If you could shoot me a quick e-mail at dkalsi(at)gmail(dot)com or simply post reply here and share you opinion on the PP47 as compared to the 2a3 and 45, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
D

D,

There is probably a 95% chance that I would take it if you don't want it. Lol....let me know.

Best Regards,

Paul

Paul,

I will definitely keep you in mind. Almost everyone that I have spoken to has told me that I will absolutely fall in love with that amplifier. I just hope it has enough power. I've never really tried these low power tube amps before. I don't listen to my system awfully loud or anything, but once in a while I do like to turn them up :-)

Thanks,
Dhar

No, problem. If you have the right speakers, I am sure you will love it. His amps are terrific.

Can someone send me contact info for James Burgess? I'm in the market for a custom-built SET and I'd like to talk to him about options, etc. (Korneff already broke my heart! ;>)

The preamp in the picture looks like the one on Audiogon right now. What are your impressions of that preamp? In many ways, it would be perfect for my set-up, except I am confused about the the two outputs. Can they be used at the same time, as I run a bi-amped system?

Hello GEO and others,

Can you tell me how I go about ordering a James Burgess SET amp. I'm interested in one but feel somewhat inadequate in my search. There is one available elsewhere but it's been modified so I have my reservations about the unit. I'd very much appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Thanks,
John

Thanks to those who helped me locate and contact amp designer/builder James Burgess. He has since designed and built me a custom 2A3 amp and full-function pre-amp that I am very happy with. For those who are looking to enter the wonderful world of 2A3, 45, or 300B SET, Mr Burgess is a great resource. He is honest, straightforward, and relatively reasonable given the quality of his work. His amps rarely come up on the used market as they are wonderful pieces to own and experience. Mine are keepers and I'm tempted to ask him to build me another, perhaps 300B monos.

Hey there CEO. Do you still have that James Burgess Preamp and power supply? Really nice. I live about 20 minutes from James and have known him going on about 13 years now.

JA Burgess did build me a wonderful 2A3 amp and custom preamp with an EAR 834 mc phono section installed a few years back. Recently sent 2A3 back for a conversion to 2A3/45 SE unit. Love his work and the man is a true gentleman. Can't recommend him enough, but you better decide soon 'cause I think he's not taking on too many more projects. His impeccable work reflects his background as a jeweler. His amp and preamps are keepers IMHO.
